A poll is more thermometer than crystal ball (AP)

WASHINGTON ? At this point four years ago, national polls taken in the run-up to presidential primaries said to get ready for a faceoff between Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Rodham Clinton. And in 2004, Howard Dean was coasting to the Democratic nomination to face President George W. Bush.

Those match-ups didn't materialize.

As the past has proved, countrywide polls are hardly crystal balls ? particularly for primary elections that are won state by state. National surveys are more like thermometers, giving insights about what people think ? and why they think it ? rather than predicting how they will vote.

State-level polling close to an election can be predictive, but even that is far from precise. Voters always can change their minds and attitudes shift quickly.

So there's no guarantee that Mitt Romney or Ron Paul, who are leading in Iowa polls just days before Tuesday's leadoff Republican presidential caucuses, will win. And there's no certainty over whether Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich will remain at the back of the pack.

Another reason: It's difficult to find true primary voters to poll since so few people vote. In 2008, a record 120,000 Republicans voted in the Iowa caucuses ? but that was only 2 percent of Iowa's adults.

Take the 2007 primary polls. As Iowa approached, most national polls said Clinton and Giuliani were the front-runners for the nomination of their parties. The final Associated Press-Ipsos poll that year put Clinton solidly ahead of Barack Obama, while on the GOP side, Giuliani held a comfortable edge over the rest of the field.

But Obama won Iowa for the Democrats, as did Mike Huckabee for the Republicans.

The national polling didn't say exactly how people would vote in 2008. And 2011 polling won't reveal who will win in 2012.

But countrywide surveys do provide context and help to explain the shifting results as the primaries roll on.

In the 2008 nomination contests, polls indicated that voters were focused on the war in Iraq and deeply dissatisfied with the Bush presidency and the country's direction. Those themes said more about why Obama and Republican John McCain won their party's nomination than the head-to-head matchups did.

This year, polls have consistently shown two dominant themes in the GOP race:

_A tepid response to the GOP field among Republican voters.

Earlier this month, an AP-GfK poll found that amid Gingrich's rise, Republican dissatisfaction with the lineup of candidates also rose. The wild swings among the anyone-but-Romney crowd have lifted nearly all of the candidates at some point this year, but none has fit the bill exactly. Republicans don't actively dislike Romney ? 73 percent say he's a strong leader, 81 percent call him likable ? yet his best showing in any horse race poll this year remains around 30 percent, and no other candidate has pulled a strong showing among the remaining 70 percent of the party.

_A deep anger among Republicans toward Obama.

This sentiment has buoyed Romney through the rise and fall of other candidates. Poll after poll reinforces his status as the candidate who runs most competitively with Obama and is seen as the most electable. And Republicans sure would like to see Obama voted out of office. In the latest AP-GfK poll, 89 percent of Republicans said he deserved to be voted out, and three-quarters said they expected him to lose.

Later this year, the Republicans' battle for voters and delegates will end and a single Republican nominee will be left standing. But no one should expect today's polling to say who that will be.

Samsung Galaxy S III Will Have 3D Functionality ? To Be Unveiled At MWC 2012 [Rumor]

Alright, so we know Fridays? ?leaked? renders of the Samsung Galaxy S III turned out to be nothing more than fan-created concept art but now we?re hearing rumblings around the net that Samsung could be planning to introduce the device at MWC 2012. Okay, so that shouldn?t come as much of a surprise given Samsung?s yearly refreshes, but the kicker is that a Korean website is reporting not only will the GSIII be unveiled but that Samsung may incorporate 3D into the device. This would help give Samsung a leg up on the iPhone and also complete their 3D ecosystem adding functionality with their 3D televisions. And here you thought you?d seen the last of 3D smartphones.

When it comes to specs, nothing has been confirmed but I?ll go ahead and play along. Rumors place the device at the ?uber-high-end? bracket of Android devices with a Super AMOLED Plus HD display, quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, LTE connectivity and of course, running on Android?s latest Ice Cream Sandwich firmware (with TouchWiz). Still unclear is if the 3D functionality will be available on all Galaxy S III devices or if it will come as a variant (Galaxy S 3D). That being said, to keep costs down, if the 3D model becomes a variant, it could share specs more along the lines of what?s already offered with the Galaxy S II.

I wouldn?t take these rumors with more than a grain of salt but with MWC 2012 only a few more months away ? we?ll find out soon enough firsthand with Phandroid reporting live from the event. Given the hate with 3D devices, would you guys be terribly upset to find out the Galaxy S III was a 3D capable device?

Online shopping up 16.4 percent on Christmas

A growing number of shoppers apparently need only the briefest of breaks before diving back in, especially if they can log in to shop.

IBM found that online shopping jumped 16.4 percent on Christmas Day over last year, and the dollar amount of those purchases that were made using mobile devices leaped 172.9 percent.

IBM tracks shopping at more than 500 websites other than Amazon.com, which is the largest. It found a huge increase in the number of shoppers making their purchases with iPhones, iPads and Android-powered mobile devices.

In fact, nearly 7 percent of all online purchases were made using iPads, just 18 months after the tablet computers were released by Apple Inc., said John Squire, chief strategy officer for IBM's Smarter Commerce unit.

The online uptick was continuing on Monday. As of 3 p.m. Eastern time, shopping was up 10 percent over Dec. 26, 2010. And the expectation was that the pace of buying would increase as the day wore on and consumers clicked on sales at various retailers.

Squire said consumers were chasing sales on both Sunday and Monday. The data did not show what portion of purchases was made using gift cards.

a new opinion in Campus & Careers about Liverpool John Moores University in general

Liverpool John Moores University in general

Newest Review:?... yourself and can cope by yourself, but the ones who do care are happy to help. University provide an extensive support team at all the cam... more

Author Name: Lucy

I am currently in my 2nd year studying Sports Development, Physical Education and Inclusion. The student halls accomodation across the city I can not fault, it is lovely, well cared for and the staff who work within them are very helpful and welcoming, although it is very expensive (?92-160 per week). The campus itself is rather dated on the outside but inside is full of technology, it is in the lovely countryside although the local residents arent very welcoming of students. The course itself is very up and down, some modules are excellent and you cannot fault them, however for every good one there is one which is very pointless and no relevant (as far as myself and others can see/understand). The lecturers are up and down as well, some are really really good and very helpful, provide support for studies and home life, although on the other hand there are others that have the attitude you are grown up enough to look after yourself and can cope by yourself, but the ones who do care are happy to help. University provide an extensive support team at all the campus' which is a great support for anyone as they deal with a variety of issues and point you in the right direction if they cannot help themselves. LJMU offer a wide variety of societies and clubs, some are very cheap and accessable but others are rather expensive (a lot more than if you joined a local club). LJMU do offer some good job opportunites but only after you have finished your degree (WOW certificates and Graduate skills, as well as gradute job days). Also a lot of sports kit is very expensive and so are the books especially as they know you are students (the uni's answer is to use your student loan that is what it is there for! Most dont understand student loan doesn't cover your accomodation!) I would reccomend this uni if you are a very independent student and cope with little study support and enjoy nightlife.

Summary: It is okay as long as you are made of money!

Evan Thomas: ?Excellent chance? Israel attacks Iran and US drawn in this year [VIDEO]

Last week, violence struck the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing 63 just days after U.S. troops completed their withdrawal, making it the deadliest day in over a year.

On this weekend?s broadcast of ?Inside Washington,? Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer blamed the violence on President Barack Obama, suggesting this might not have happened had he left a ?residual? force in the beleaguered country.

?This is a direct result of the vacuum created by the president, against the recommendations of the generals on the ground to leave a force,? Krauthammer said. ?And that is a failure of this administration. We had three years to do one thing. The surge had succeeded ? al Qaida had been defeated, and in the surge, even [Nouri al-] Maliki had reduced and defeated the Shiite militias, who are now resurgent in Basra and in Baghdad. In other words, you had the beginnings of a national government. And what we needed was America in the continuity, and as soon as it was removed gratuitously, all of the unraveling has begun.?

Former Newsweek editor Evan Thomas, now a columnist for Politico and co-author of ?Playbook 2012: The Right Fights Back? with Mike Allen, however, warns this unrest in Iraq could spread to Iran. He said the unrest could push Israel into a strike against Iran, which the United States would be drawn into as soon as this year ? an election year.

?I think most Americans really want to believe this is behind us and past us,? Thomas said. ?And you know, not only is it goin? to happen, is it happening in Iraq, but Iran ? I think there is an excellent chance that this year, this election year, Israel is going to attack Iran, and the United States is going to be drawn back into a really scary, violent situation?? Thomas said.

Watch:

Thomas? ?Inside Washington? co-panelist, syndicated columnist Mark Shields said that if in fact his prediction were true, the United States should only intervene if it is done the right way ? with a declaration of war and a clear list of objectives.

?Let?s hope ? Evan is rarely wrong ? [that Evan] is wrong. But if in fact, we are about to embark upon that, let?s do it this time the right way, by a full and complete debate and a declaration of war, and a statement going in about what our objective is and what we are willing to do as a people, as a nation, a military, to achieve those ends, and when it will be over and how we will get out,? Shields said. ?And that is what haunts us from all of these incursions and all of these expeditions.?

Twin probes to circle moon to study gravity field (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The moon has come a long way since Galileo first peered at it through a telescope. Unmanned probes have circled around it and landed on its surface. Twelve American astronauts have walked on it. And lunar rocks and soil have been hauled back from it.

Despite being well studied, Earth's closest neighbor remains an enigma.

Over the New Year's weekend, a pair of spacecraft the size of washing machines are set to enter orbit around it in the latest lunar mission. Their job is to measure the uneven gravity field and determine what lies beneath ? straight down to the core.

Since rocketing from the Florida coast in September, the near-identical Grail spacecraft have been independently traveling to their destination and will arrive 24 hours apart. Their paths are right on target that engineers recently decided not to tweak their positions.

"Both spacecraft have performed essentially flawlessly since launch, but one can never take anything for granted in this business," said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The nail-biting part is yet to come. On New Year's Eve, one of the Grail probes ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? will fire its engine to slow down so that it could be captured into orbit. This move will be repeated by the other the following day.

Engineers said the chances of the probes overshooting are slim since their trajectories have been precise. Getting struck by a cosmic ray may prevent the completion of the engine burn and they won't get boosted into the right orbit.

"I know I'm going to be nervous. I'm definitely a worrywart," said project manager David Lehman of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $496 million, three-month mission.

Once in orbit, the spacecraft will spend the next two months flying in formation and chasing one another around the moon until they are about 35 miles above the surface with an average separation of 124 miles. Data collection won't begin until March.

Previous missions have attempted to measure lunar gravity with mixed success. Grail is the first mission dedicated to this goal.

As the probes circle the moon, regional changes in the lunar gravity field will cause them to speed up or slow down. This in turn will change the distance between them. Radio signals transmitted by the spacecraft will measure the slight distance gaps, allowing researchers to map the underlying gravity field.

Using the gravity information, scientists can deduce what's below or at the lunar surface such as mountains and craters and may help explain why the far side of the moon is more rugged than the side that faces Earth.

The probes are officially known as Grail-A and Grail-B. Several months ago, NASA hosted a contest inviting schools and students to submit new names. The probes will be christened with the winning names after the second orbit insertion, Zuber said.

Besides the one instrument on board, each spacecraft also carries a camera for educational purposes. Run by a company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, middle school students from participating schools can choose their own lunar targets to image during the mission.

A trip to the moon is typically relatively quick. It took Apollo astronauts three days to get there. Since Grail was launched from a relatively small rocket to save on costs, the journey took 3 1/2 months.

Scientists expect the mission to yield a bounty of new information about the moon, but don't count on the U.S. sending astronauts back anytime soon. The Constellation program was canceled last year by President Barack Obama, who favors landing on an asteroid as a stepping stone to Mars.

3 US citizens among victims in Mexico bus attack (AP)

PACHUCA, Mexico ? Three U.S. citizens traveling to spend the holidays with their relatives in Mexico were among those killed in a spree of shooting attacks on buses in northern Mexico, authorities from both countries said Friday.

A group of five gunmen attacked three buses in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Thursday, killing a total of seven passengers in what authorities said appeared to be a violent robbery spree.

The Americans killed were a mother and her two daughters who were returning to visit relatives in the region, known as the Huasteca, said an official in the neighboring state of Hidalgo, where the mother was born.

Hidalgo state regional assistant secretary Jorge Rocha identified the dead U.S. mother as Maria Sanchez Hernandez, 39, of Fort Worth, Texas, and the daughters as Karla, 19, and Cristina, 13. Rocha said all three held dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship. A 14-year-old Mexican nephew traveling with the three was also killed.

A U.S. Embassy official confirmed the women's nationalities, but could offer no information on their ages or hometowns. The official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said consular authorities were offering assistance to the victims' relatives.

While funeral plans were unclear, Rocha said Sanchez Hernandez's mother wants her daughter to be buried in Mexico.

Three other Mexican citizens were killed in the Thursday attacks on the three buses.

The five gunmen who allegedly carried out the attacks were later killed by soldiers.

Earlier in their spree, the gunmen shot to death three people and killed a fourth with grenade in the nearby town of El Higo, Veracruz.

On Thursday, the U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros, a Mexican border city north of where the attacks occurred, said in a statement that "several vehicles," including the buses, were attacked, but did not specify what the other vehicles were.

The consulate urged Americans to "exercise caution" when traveling in Veracruz, and "avoid intercity road travel at night."

While the specific area where the Thursday attacks occurred is not frequented by foreign travelers, other parts of the Huasteca ? a hilly, verdant area on the Gulf coast ? are popular among Mexican tourists and some foreigners.

The attack occurred near the border with the state of Tamaulipas, an area that has been the scene of bloody battles between the Zetas and Gulf drug cartels.

Yahoo to weigh deals for Asian assets: sources (Reuters)

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc is considering a plan to unload most of its prized Asian assets in a complex deal valued at roughly $17 billion, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, winning nods of approval from Wall Street and driving its shares higher.

The offer - the latest among proposals put forth in recent months to resuscitate the once high-flying Internet company - is expected to be considered by Yahoo's board on Thursday, sources said.

The board was uninterested in entertaining offers for the entire company at this point, said one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Yahoo's increasing difficulty in competing with Internet heavyweights such as Google Inc and Facebook have forced it to explore proposals to revamp its business.

The former Internet powerhouse, which fired its Chief Executive Carol Bartz in September, has a market value of around $18.5 billion.

The Asian split-off plan to be considered by the board follows previous proposals by private equity firms to buy a minority stake in Yahoo. Those proposals were fiercely opposed by some of Yahoo's largest shareholders, including activist hedge fund manager Dan Loeb, of Third Point LLC.

"It's clear that Dan Loeb at Third Point is exerting some influence," said Adam Seessel, director of research at Martin Capital Management, which added to its position in Yahoo a few weeks ago. He "is doing all Yahoo shareholders a favor by looking over the board and making sure they do the right thing."

Yahoo shares, which languished in the red along with much of the technology sector on Wednesday, reversed course and ended the session almost 6 percent higher at $15.99. It inched further upward in after-hours trading to $16.09.

At a $17 billion valuation, which includes the value of the Alibaba stake that Yahoo would retain under the latest proposal, a deal would mean the Asian assets are worth $14 per Yahoo share, one of the sources said.

The deal would essentially mean that Yahoo's core U.S.-based Internet business is valued at only $2 a share, according to Lawrence Haverty, a fund manager with GAMCO investors, which owns Yahoo shares.

Given that Yahoo has roughly $2 a share in cash on its balance sheet, Haverty said the deal left plenty of room for upside in the core business.

"This is the right thing to do. This is how you maximize shareholder value," he said, noting that he believed the tax-free structure of the plan seemed feasible.

TAX-FREE DEAL

Alibaba chief Jack Ma has said several times he would like to buy back Yahoo's stake in his company, one of Asia's largest Internet corporations. Investors have long said Yahoo's investment in Alibaba, along with its 35 percent slice of Yahoo Japan, are far and away the U.S. company's most prized assets.

In the deal under contemplation, Yahoo would effectively transfer most of its 40 percent slice of Alibaba back to the Chinese company and all of its stake in Yahoo Japan to Softbank Corp, sources said.

Alibaba and Yahoo Japan would each create separate legal entities where they would put cash and operating assets, and then trade those with Yahoo, making the deal tax-free, the sources said.

At the end of the contemplated transaction Yahoo would retain a 15 percent stake in Alibaba, the sources said.

The final deal size will depend on how the assets are valued, another source said.

"It's definitely a step in the right direction. It shows that the board is thinking about shareholders as opposed to their own interests," Martin Capital's Seessel said.

Yahoo declined to comment. The possible deals were first reported in The New York Times.

Last week, sources told Reuters a consortium consisting of private equity group Silver Lake, Microsoft Corp and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz were reworking a bid for a minority stake in Yahoo.

Southwest Florida home sales and prices up

A sign outside a house at 2844 Novus Street in Sarasota, on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, indicates a short sale in progress. (Herald-Tribune archive / 2010)

Published: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 12:16 p.m.
Last Modified: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 12:16 p.m.

Homes sales in Southwest Florida rose by double digits in November and prices bounced back markedly from what had been threatening to be a new post-recession low.

Sales rose 17 percent in the Sarasota-Bradenton market and 11 percent in Charlotte County-North Port, according to data released by the trade group Florida Realtors.

In Sarasota-Bradenton, the median of $152,100 last month was up 2 percent from a year ago and up 11 percent from October.

That October median of $137,100 was a price that only hovered $800 above the lowest since the Great Recession.

The November median in Charlotte County-North Port was $102,600, up 11 percent from a year ago and up 14 percent from October.

Statewide, nearly 13,000 homes changed hands last month, an 11 percent increase from a year ago. The statewide median was $130,100, roughly flat with a year ago and down only slightly from October.

NATIONALLY: Existing home sales up 4 percent

The number of Americans who bought previously occupied homes rose last month. But the National Association of Realtors says it overstated about 3.5 million sales during and after the Great Recession, showing the housing market remains much weaker than previously thought.

The private trade group says sales rose 4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.42 million. That's below the roughly 6 million sales a year that economists say are consistent with a healthy housing market. But it's ahead of 2008's revised sales, now considered the worst in 13 years.

The nearly 4.2 million homes sold last year are far fewer than the nearly 7.1 million sold at the peak of the housing boom in 2005. This year is on pace to slightly exceed last year's total of about 4.25 million.

The trade group revised down its sales from 2007 through October more than 14 percent, from 24.8 million to nearly 21.3 million. Among the reasons for the lower figures, the Realtors group says: changes in the way the Census Bureau collects data, population shifts and some sales being counted twice.

The sharp revisions could cast doubt on future sales numbers from the Realtors' group, a private trade organization that lobbies on behalf of its 1.2 million members.

John Ryding, an economist at RDQ Economics, called the revisions "massive" and cited them as an example of how economic data can be unreliable.

The Realtors' group said it trusts its new figures, which were checked by government agencies and CoreLogic, the California-based real estate data firm that first raised questions about the numbers earlier this year.

Other economists said the lower numbers won't necessarily matter, since sales are up and fewer homes are sitting idle waiting for buyers. Sales have risen more than 12 percent over the past 12 months. The supply of unsold homes has fallen more than 18 percent.

More than two years after the recession officially ended, many people can't qualify for loans or meet higher down-payment requirements. Even those with excellent credit and stable jobs are holding off because they fear that home prices will keep falling. Sales are also being hurt by a decline in first-time buyers, who are critical to reviving the housing market.

The new figures show that sales fell in three of the past four years since the housing market began to drop in 2006. Declining prices and record-low mortgage rates haven't been enough to boost sales.

The changing numbers could affect how economists view the trade group's data. It could also affect companies that use the figures for hiring and expansion plans.

Sales are measured when buyers close on homes. But many deals are collapsing before that point. One-third of Realtors say they've had at least one contract scuttled in November and October, up from 18 percent in September.

Contracts have been canceled for any of several reasons: Banks have declined mortgage applications; home inspectors have found problems; appraisals showed a home was worth less than the bid; a buyer lost a job before the closing.

The median sales price rose 2.1 percent to $164,200 in November.

The high rate of foreclosures has made resold homes much cheaper than new homes. The median price of a new home is roughly 30 percent higher than the price of one that's been occupied before ? twice the normal markup.

Investors are taking advantage of the discounts. Their purchases made up 19 percent of all sales last month, compared with fewer than 10 percent in healthier housing markets.

Purchases among first-time buyers rose slightly last month to make up 35 percent of sales, up from 34 percent in October. In healthy markets, first-time buyers make up at least 40 percent of sales.

At the same time, homes at risk of foreclosure made up 29 percent of sales last month. That's up from 28 percent in October. Those homes made up less than 10 percent of sales in healthier periods. Investors are increasingly buying homes priced under $100,000.

Sales rose across the country in November. They increased on a seasonal basis by nearly 10 percent in the Northeast, 4.3 percent in the Midwest, 3.6 percent in the West and 2.4 percent in the South.

The glut of unsold homes declined to 2.58 million homes. At last month's sales pace, it would take seven months to clear those homes. Analysts say a healthy supply can be cleared in about six months.

SKorean president presses Japan on sex slaves (AP)

TOKYO ? South Korea's visiting president pressed his Japanese counterpart Sunday to resolve a long-standing grievance regarding Korean women forced to serve as sexual slaves during World War II, calling it a "stumbling block" in their relations.

Japan maintains that the matter was settled by a bilateral treaty in 1965 that normalized relations, and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he reiterated that stance during their meeting in the ancient capital of Kyoto.

Japanese officials have apologized to the victims, who say they still want compensation and the prosecution of wrongdoers.

President Lee Myung-bak said only 63 women who have identified themselves publicly as former wartime sex slaves are still alive, average age 86. He said 16 such women died this year.

"They could all die in a few years," Lee said, according to his spokesman Park Jeong-ha. "In such a case, (the issue) will remain a big burden the two countries cannot resolve ... We can only resolve (the issue) now."

Historians say up to 200,000 women, mainly from the Korean peninsula and China, were forced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers in military brothels during the war.

"South Korea and Japan should become true partners for co-prosperity and regional peace and stability. For that, I think we need to have the genuine courage of resolving as a priority the issue of comfort women, which has been a stumbling block in relations between the two countries," Lee told Noda, according to a media pool report posted on the president's website.

The issue has emerged after South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled in August that it's unconstitutional for the government not to make specific diplomatic efforts to settle the matter, essentially pushing Lee's government to raise that matter with Tokyo.

Also, protesters in Seoul on Wednesday placed a statue of a girl representing the victims in front of the Japanese Embassy to mark the 1,000th weekly rally for the women forced to work in the wartime brothels.

Several former comfort women, along with some lawmakers, joined the rally, around the life-size statue of the girl, who is sitting on a chair in traditional Korean clothes.

Noda called the statue "regrettable" and said he asked Lee to remove it.

"Our nation's legal position on the issue of comfort women has already been settled," Noda told reporters. He added that Japan would continue to make efforts from a "humanitarian standpoint."

Lee said such a statue would have not been built if Japan came up with more sincere measures to resolve the issue, the presidential spokesman said.

In 1993, then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono apologized to victims after documents were uncovered showing military involvement in the brothels.

Tokyo in 1995 initiated a fund of private donations as a way for Japan to pay former sex slaves without providing official compensation. But many comfort women have rejected the fund, demanding a government apology approved by parliament, along with compensation paid by the government.

Noda said the leaders also discussed speeding up the start of free trade negotiations.

"Witcher 2" pub threatens pirates while eschewing DRM

By Kyle Orland

In the never-ending battle between software pirates and PC game makers, Polish "The Witcher 2" publisher CD Projekt Red has come down firmly against the kind of invasive digital rights management (DRM) protections favored by many game makers.

But that doesn't mean the publisher is willing to simply allow illegal copies of its games to flourish online. The company recently confirmed it has been contacting thousands of alleged German pirates demanding penalties of over $1185?for their ill-gotten games.

"As you know, we aren't huge fans of any sort of DRM here at CD Projekt Red," the company told industry site Eurogamer. "DRM itself is a pain for legal gamers ??the same group of honest people who decided that our game was worth its price, and went and bought it. We don't want to make their lives more difficult by introducing annoying copy protection systems."

"However, that shouldn't be confused with us giving a green light to piracy," the company continued. "We will never approve of it, since it doesn't only affect us but has a negative impact on the whole game industry.

Piracy has become a major problem for PC game publishers, and "The Witcher 2" hasn't been immune from the trend. CD Projekt Red CEO and Co-founder?Marcin?Iwinski recently estimated the game saw at least 4.5 million illegal downloads via BitTorrent, compared to?roughly a million legitimate sales.

Despite those figures, Iwinski said at the time he still doesn't think technical DRM solutions to stop piracy are worthwhile. Such solutions always end up either too light, and therefore easy for pirates to circumvent, or else so invasive they get in the way of enjoyment by legitimate customers, Iwinski said.

It's a valid concern?? publishers including EA and Ubisoft have faced vocal customer backlash for piracy-prevention schemes that require a persistent internet connection during play or that install harmful, hard-to-remove rootkits on players' systems.

But where technical measures fail, CD Projekt Red seems more than willing to try out legal measures instead, even though its fully aware such efforts may hurt the company's image.?"We've seen some of the concern online about our efforts to thwart piracy, and we can assure you that we only take legal actions against users who we are 100 per cent sure have downloaded our game illegally," the company told Eurogamer.

It's an interesting piracy-fighting balancing act, and one that game-makers of all stripes are going to have to address if they want to take part in the PC game market.

3 children, 2 adults reportedly shot dead

NBC Chicago

Authorities investigate the shooting deaths of five people, including three children, in Emington, Ill.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Five people, including three children, were found shot to death Friday afternoon at a home in the small town of Emington, Ill., NBCChicago.com reported.

The bodies of a woman, a girl and a baby were found in the backyard of home. A man and a boy were found nearby. All had been shot, officials said. The names of the victims haven't yet been publicly released.

The Chicago Tribune quoted Debbie Delaney, secretary and treasurer of the?town, as saying the girl was in second grade and the boy was in kindergarten. The Tribune said?her husband is Emington Mayor Daniel Delaney and her son is a?firefighter called to the scene.

"They're all gone, all gone," Delaney told the Tribune.

Livingston County board member Bob Young, who lives in Emington, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago, said?the family had moved to the town within the last six months and the two older children attended school in nearby Saunemin. The street where the family lived was closed by police, he said.

"We did have an awful disaster here," said?Mayor?Delaney, who's been in office for 24 years. "You never would have thought it would happen in our town of 100 people or less. ... Right now it's just very, very, very sad for us here."

Residents described Emington as a once strictly farming town that has gone through changes in the last 20 years as young families moved in.?Young said the town has become more of a bedroom community from which people commute north to cities such as Joliet, about 45 miles away.

Delaney said the town is not prosperous and has received help from the state. "It's always really had a hard time. Most of the people are retired or farmers who moved into town," he said.

Young said he did not know the family well.

"We've seen the kids playing at the playground and talk to them," Young said. "We thought everything was fine."

Sale of Lethal Injection Drug Sodium Thiopental to Be Restricted in Europe (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in S?ddeutsche Zeitung.

(BERLIN) -- The European Union is set to restrict the sale to the United States of one of the main active substances needed for lethal injections. According to information obtained by the S?ddeutsche Zeitung, the export of sodium thiopental will only be possible by special permission, beginning Friday, posing a major problem for the US justice system.

The Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) is to publish a new, uniform set of authorized export regulations, valid for all short or intermediate-acting barbituric acids. One of them is the easy-to-use and fast-working anesthetic sodium thiopental, which is used to execute criminals in the states of Ohio and Washington. In 33 other states, sodium thiopental is a key ingredient in other toxic cocktails used to kill inmates. (See TIME's 10 Biggest U.S. News Stories of 2011.)

Approximately 100 people are executed by American authorities every year. But in the past few months, supplies of the drug have become scarce. The only manufacturer based in the US, Hospira, is unwilling to continue to make its product available for lethal injections, and under American law it is not allowed to simply change the injection "recipe." To do that, a complicated approval procedure is required. So authorities -- who have been postponing executions as a result of the difficulty in finding supplies -- have been seeking other sources such as those in the EU.

Anti-death penalty and other human rights groups have pushed for the EU decision to now require special permission to export to countries outside of Europe. The most prominent supporter of the move is Germany's Minister of Economy and head of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), Philipp R?sler. In an earlier role as Minister of Health he had written to German manufacturers of sodium thiopental to encourage them not to sell the drug to the US.

After changing jobs, he introduced to the Commission a bill to create a regulation valid Europe-wide that would effectively prevent the export of thiopental to the US. Initially, the proposal met with resistance from other states, but it has now been approved by the majority of the 27 member states.

Space Park in Redondo Beach will get the star treatment

For half a century, the sprawling 110-acre aerospace complex in Redondo Beach has played host to the development of the nation's most advanced and secret spacecraft.

Known as Space Park, the site was built at the height of the Cold War after the launch of Sputnik for engineers to develop a high-powered rocket that could deliver a nuclear warhead 6,000 miles away in less than an hour to virtually wipe out an entire city: the intercontinental ballistic missile.

The complex's 47 buildings have served as a nerve center for the development and construction of high-powered lasers, cutting-edge electronics and sophisticated spacecraft. Satellites developed at the site have explored faraway planets, provided space-based telecommunications for troops on the battlefield and spied on enemies' fortified defense enclaves.

Space Park is also the site of the famed "Falcon and the Snowman" incident, in which a disillusioned young employee with a top security clearance spied for the Soviet Union. Along with an accomplice, he was arrested in 1977 after selling the Soviets thousands of secret documents, including material revealing spy satellite plans. They were convicted and sent to prison.

The incident was featured in a bestselling book and 1985 movie starring Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton.

On Wednesday, the campus will be designated a historic aerospace site in a ceremony by the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, the nation's largest society of aerospace engineers and scientists.

In addition to the ICBM, Space Park is the birthplace for the rocket engines that first lowered man onto the moon, instrument packages that scoured Mars' surface for life, and the James Webb Space Telescope, which is now under development to replace the Hubble Space Telescope.

"As a company, we always wanted to recruit the most talented people to take on the government's most important programs," said 98-year-old Simon Ramo, who along with his late colleague Dean Wooldridge bought the land from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1960 for their company, Space Technology Laboratories.

Space Park would eventually become home to TRW Inc. ? the "R" representing Ramo and the "W" Wooldridge. Since 2002, Space Park has been part of aerospace giant Northrop Grumman Corp., which recently moved to its headquarters to Falls Church, Va., from Century City.

Today, about 7,500 people work at Space Park and its 5 million square feet of engineering office space, high-bay assembly areas and clean-room laboratories.

Decades after the Cold War, there are still details of Space Park programs that remain sensitive to national security, and Ramo can't talk about them.

"A lot of amazing things were done there," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. "Some of those things we might actually find out about. I would guess there's more history there that we don't know about than we do."

Space Park is a key part of California's space industry, along with Boeing Co.'s satellite-making operation in nearby El Segundo and Lockheed Martin Corp.'s missile and space division in Sunnyvale.

The sprawling complex is designed like a college campus ? spread out with gardens and sculptures dotting the landscape. That was by design. Ramo wanted every engineer to have a window and said he wanted to differentiate Space Park from other aerospace companies, which would pack engineers side by side at drafting tables in windowless, musty hangars.

Ramo and Wooldridge had experienced the claustrophobia of such working conditions as colleagues at Hughes Aircraft Co. in Playa Vista, where they had an established record working at the leading edge of the new field of electronic warfare and guidance systems. The pair walked away from the company and their eccentric boss, Howard Hughes, in 1953 and started their own company.

It wasn't long after they opened for business that President Eisenhower gave the young scientists the task of developing the ICBM. With that responsibility came a reputation as a national leader in space technology.

"Everyone knew that if you were working for us on the ICBM program, you were working on the top-priority program in the country," Ramo said.

One of their recruits was Bruce Gerding, now a vice president of Northrop's aerospace systems unit who joined TRW in 1970. He has been based at Space Park for more than four decades.

"I always thought of Space Park as an aerospace Camelot," he said. "When you think about the legacy of Space Park, it's not the lasers or satellites that we've built here. It's the people who built and developed the technology."

Loren Thompson, defense policy analyst for the Lexington Institute in Arlington, Va., said that Space Park has had a concentration of skills that can't be trumpeted because of national security secrets. But those in the defense industry know its importance: "People in Space Park accomplish missions that no one else in the world can accomplish."

'Last of Us' wants to set new gaming standard | TG Daily

One of the most anticipated games heading to the PS3 will be more than just a game, according to the publisher's lofty promotional speak.

Naughty Dog, which is known most recently for the PS3-exclusive Uncharted series, is working on a new game called The Last of Us.

The publisher describes the game as "a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind."

Just what is so genre-defining about it? Naughty Dog says it's more of an experience than a game, because players have complete freedom as they explore and solve the underlying mystery.

"We're trying to move the medium of video games into an area elevated in the same manner of respect of film. We want to redefine what our medium is even called. 'Video game' is not an accurate name anymore. It is not necessarily a game with rules and a winner and a loser. It's an experience," said Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra in a USA Today interview.

If this whole idea of a game being as artistic and masterful as a movie sounds familiar to you, you're not alone. It's been a mantra of Sony and the PS3 since the system was first introduced. It's long been a goal of Sony to 'blur the line' between movies and video games, allowing gamers to feel like they're stepping right into a cinematic experience.

Of course, while video game graphics have improved incredibly over the last few years, it's still very easy to tell what is a game and what's a computer-animated motion picture. That line will only continue to be wiped away, though, and Naughty Dog hopes The Last of Us is remembered as one of the milestone titles as the industry heads in that direction.

Where Would Ron Paul Slash $1 Trillion from the Federal Budget? (ContributorNetwork)

GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul released a new commercial pledging to slash $1 trillion in federal spending during the first year of his presidency. How does the Texas Congressman plan to do that?

Here's a look at Ron Paul's proposed cuts:

Medicaid, children's health care, food stamps

Politico reported Paul has claimed he would strip these programs from mandatory federal spending and reassign them to the individual states in the form of block grants. Paul opposes Obamacare, but National Journal reported he would not seek to immediately change health coverage for the elderly and children.

Pentagon

Paul told The Quad-City Times two months ago that $200 billion could be cut from the Defense Department. He has frequently campaigned to close U.S. foreign bases and, as Associated Press reported, to bring all American troops home "as soon as the ships could get there."

Foreign Aid

Paul would reduce all foreign aid to zero, Politico reported. The move would save up to $139 billion per year from known sources, excluding any foreign aid buried inside other agency budgets. Paul said the U.S. government cannot afford to spend money on foreign aid every year.

Cutting federal employees

Paul has proposed eliminating 221,000 federal jobs -- all of which he deems nonproductive -- from five Cabinet level departments (Interior, Energy, Education, Commerce and Housing and Urban Development). According to The Hill, Paul would target nonproductive jobs and continue to eliminate federal jobs wherever they do not serve the national interest.

Cut president's salary

Paul recommends reducing the president's salary from $400,000 a year to $39,336 a year, roughly the median income of an average American worker, according to a report by USA Today. The last president to earn a salary that low was Ulysses S. Grant in 1873, when he earned $50,000 per year.

As euro reels, France and Germany push to rewrite the rules

France and Germany agreed on a joint strategy to stem the European debt crisis: Rewrite the treaties that govern the eurozone.

In a much-needed show of unity, French and German leaders offered a potential balm to Europe's battered economies ahead of a crucial make-or-break week for the European Union and for a yet uncertain global economic recovery.

The Franco-German proposal suggests rewriting European treaties to enforce budgetary discipline by March 2012. The European Central Bank is also expected to lower loan rates on Thursday.

But the main event is the critical two-day EU heads of state summit that ends Friday, when leaders are expected to support the Franco-German plan to reestablish confidence in Europe.

Without that support, investors doubt European sovereign defaults can be avoided, something that could trigger a doomsday scenario for the continent: The collapse of the euro; a breakup of the EU; and a recession that would harm the economies of much of the rest of the world.? Months of indecision, even after Greece, Ireland, and Portugal had to be bailed out, has undermined confidence that European governments would all be able to pay back their debts.

But even i they do agree, there is no guarantee of economic recovery or no further defaults. Rewriting treaties take a long time, and would come amid severe disagreements between eurozone members on the best financial plan of action for the Continent.

The situation became critical two weeks ago when the borrowing costs of Italy and Spain surged. Investors and global powers like China and the US were no longer reassured by political promises and demanded concrete measures to secure an exit from the crisis.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany are now trying to deliver real action. They represent the continent?s two biggest economies and populations, as well as a broader regional split between northern fiscally responsible and southern spendthrift countries. So far though the two have offered different recipes for the same malady, in a big part driven by their domestic political setbacks.

Global shares rose on the agreement and the cost of borrowing for peripheral countries, including Italy and Spain, continued to drop. Italy?s approval Sunday of its most severe austerity measures yet have fueled optimism, but the Franco-German consensus is the main drive, analysts said.
