Fla. man wins nat'l memory contest held in NYC

(AP) ? A Florida man who trained for a national memory competition by memorizing a randomly shuffled deck of cards as he climbed Mount Everest won the mental bout Saturday and broke a U.S. record.

Nelson Dellis, 28, of Miami, said his rigorous training for the challenge required him to reshuffle the deck of cards at each new altitude in his climb.

"I was getting my best times the higher I got," said Dellis, who was surprised at his ability to stay focused as he made his way toward the summit before having to stop because of problems with his oxygen mask. "I was getting so much, much less oxygen up there."

It was the second year in a row that Dellis won the USA Memory Championship, which was held in Manhattan. He also broke a record for memorizing 303 random numbers in five minutes, besting the previous record of 248 numbers in five minutes, which he himself set last year.

"It's all tricks," Dellis explained of his win. "I don't have a good memory naturally. It's something I learned and taught myself."

Among the tricks he relies on is an ancient method he refers to as the "journey method," where he visualizes memorized objects as he moves mentally through a place he knows well. To recall the information, he mentally walks back through the journey.

About 50 people competed in Saturday's challenge of mnemonic skills that required them to recall random information including 99 names and faces, a 50-line unpublished poem and 200 random words.

Texan Ron White, the 2010 national memory champion, came in second; Michael Mirski, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, came in third.

Four-time winners Hershey High School in Hershey, Pa., won its fifth title in a competition against groups from another high school and the University of Pennsylvania.

The competition, now in its 15th year, was founded by a former IBM executive to promote the capabilities of the human brain.

Dellis, a former software developer turned "memory consultant," said he was compelled to research the mysteries of memory after his paternal grandmother began showing symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and died in 2009.

He said he always thought memory was static, but he learned he was wrong: "The mind is trainable."

Picture An Embryo

As part of an NIH-funded project, Bradley Smith, associate dean for creative work, research and graduate education at the University of Michigan, posted a collection of optical images and MRI scans of human embryos to the web. Intended for a clinical audience, Smith talks about the unexpected response he got from the public.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

Joining us now is Flora Lichtman, our multimedia editor. Hi, Flora.

FLORA LICHTMAN, BYLINE: Hi, Ira.

FLATOW: What have you made for us this week?

LICHTMAN: This is a fascinating one, I think.

FLATOW: They're all fascinating.

LICHTMAN: Oh, OK. Thanks.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: This one, really, I had to give a lot of thought to. It comes from Bradley Smith, who's in the School of Art and Design at Michigan - at the University of Michigan. He gets a PhD in anatomy and sort of specializes in medical visualization. And back in the 1990s, the NIH asked him - funded him to make a collection of images of human embryos, and he thought that he was doing this sort of for the clinical community. You know, the idea was to make - take MRI scans of embryos and view these are from a museum - by the way, the museum of - in D.C., of Health and Medicine - and to make them accessible for medical students and so they won't degrade. And it turned out that when he put them online, which is part of his funding agreement, that he got all sort of, you know, strong reaction from the public.

FLATOW: Right, the videos of the embryo.

LICHTMAN: The videos of the embryos. He does sort of time lapse of human development, and it was really fascinating to watch, going from this sort of little hard to, you know, nondescript ball to what you would recognize...

FLATOW: As an embryo.

LICHTMAN: ...as an embryo or a fetus.

FLATOW: This is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR. I'm Ira Flatow talking with Flora Lichtman about our Video Pick of the Week, and it's a - videos of embryos, all different kinds of embryos. So you got the film, the footage...

LICHTMAN: Right. So...

FLATOW: ...and you put your own video together out of this.

LICHTMAN: Right. So he has this whole collection of different embryos at different stages, and they - you measure age of embryo based - its postovulatory age. So it's very hard to tell exactly when the embryo was conceived, but you can kind of estimate based on ovulation. And so you look and you can see after 28 days what it looks like, after 42 days. And he's put together, actually, these sort of amazing time lapses so you can watch these changes over time.

And in talking to Smith, he's really thought a lot about what - why we have such a strong reaction to looking at embryos, and he's found this firsthand. I mean, and he gets emails all the time and sort of unpacks these questions, like, you know, is it - when you look at these pictures, does it strike you as more human or less human than you would have imagined, he asks. This is what he asked audience when he shows them. What is your experience with seeing these pictures in the past? You know, he said imagine 300 or 400 years ago, would - how would people imagine what an embryo is? This is a technologically...

FLATOW: Yeah. Yeah.

LICHTMAN: ... mediated experience.

FLATOW: And not only that, he's taken the technology faster - further, as you show. He's done MRIs, right?

LICHTMAN: That's right. So...

FLATOW: Never seen before.

LICHTMAN: No one had ever done this before, and you can see the sort of whole internal structures. You can watch organs develop, the neural tube. And I think, you know, he made the point, this - it didn't break much new ground scientifically. People understood a lot of this already, but now it gives medical students, for example, an opportunity to look through and ask questions without actually destroying an embryo to answer them.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. And it was a new experience for you to take these and put these together? He really hadn't this in any...

LICHTMAN: Yeah. So he has a website which has most of these images up there, and we have a link to it on our website if you want to keep perusing or learn more about the different stages. But yeah, it became a challenge to sort of figure out what the story was. But the other interesting thing about Doctor Smith is that, you know, he did this years ago, and he still gets like thousands of hits per week. People are just fascinated by these images, but he also has taken them and turned them into art pieces.

FLATOW: Yeah, and his artwork ends the video, and it's a very thoughtful video. You know, you've done some that are just splashy. This is a very thoughtful one.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: I...

FLATOW: Gets you thinking about it.

LICHTMAN: It took a lot of thought to figure out exactly, you know, what I was looking at, and why I was having a reaction to these pictures.

FLATOW: Yeah. And so it's our Video Pick of the Week. It's up there on our website @sciencefriday.com. Go to take a look and then have your own reaction to it and leave us a message there on our website, or you can tweet us all week and leave us a message also that way. Thank you, Flora.

LICHTMAN: Thanks, Ira.

COMMUNICATIONS ARTICLES ? A Review of Apple's iPhone 4

Since the first time the iPhone hit the market in 2007, Apple has been constantly upgrading its technology and providing more stylish phones. The iPhone 4 is the latest model. It has a noticeable amount of enhancements from the previous phones and enough apps and features to entertain the average person all day long. In fact, for some people, it?s too much of a diversion.

Let?s be honest, the Apple Iphone has grown to become very popular. A large reason for this is because of all the programs like mobile phone spying software.

When I first reviewed the first Iphone, there weren?t that many applications available for it. That definitely has changed! Now you can find mobile phone spying applications as well as a great deal of other valuable applications!

How much you?ll like the iPhone 4 depends a great deal on how you feel about the Apple product line in general. That?s because this company is very big on connecting their various products and services. For example, when you have an iPhone, you?ll have access to the iTunes library, where you can download music and videos. While it?s another popular Apple product, the iPhone can be considered both a phone and an iPod together. With an iPhone, you will be able to peruse all the apps from the App Store and then download them to your phone. To reiterate, the way you feel about Apple will determine how you feel about the iPhone, since the two cannot be separated.

The iPhone 4 gives you the chance to multitask. This is something relevant considering how many functions you can perform on this phone. When you click on the start button two times, you can see how many applications are running at the same time. You then have the option to select the application you want to use and then reduce the others. The is the same concept that you would use for a computer. But now you can do this on your phone as well. You can, for example, make voice calls on an internet calling app like Skype while other apps are running. Or, if you are using GPS while you are on the road, you can still do other things in the background like listen to music. Multitasking is one of the wonderful features that allows the iPhone 4 to be very easy to use.

Ever since iPhones were introduced, they?ve been famous for the many apps that can be used with them. The number of apps currently available is staggering, and seems to grow exponentially all the time. Presently, there are 300k apps on the market for the iPhone. Quite naturally, this will make it difficult to count them all. But it is not that hard to find the ones that you deem as being useful. You can browse the Apple Store, or just do a search for what you?re looking for, along with the word ?app.? The vast amount of different and oftentimes free applications that you can get on your iPhone 4 can give you phone a lot more functionality that what it already has. Naturally, you will only have an opportunity to utilize a small amount of the apps that are available. But this amount might be okay. Whether you decide to buy an iPhone 4 actually relies on how impressed you are with what the phone has to offer. If you want the ability to download music, content from iTunes, take pictures and also play games, then you will want to get the iPhone 4. We have only had space to examine a few of its tons of capabilities. But if you are a light phone user and the extras do not appeal to you, then you might discover that the iPhone 4 is more than you will ever need.

Mobile phone GPS tracking can be a fantastic way of knowing precisely where a cell phone can be at any point in time!

TiVo Premiere 500GB coming Sunday along with lower prices for service, XL and Elite DVRs

The new TiVo Premiere featuring an upgraded 500GB hard drive (65 percent more storage than the old 320GB unit) that we spotted this morning is official, and will start shipping March 25th -- but that's not it. As we also noted, it only requires a one year service agreement at $14.99 per month or $12.99 for users with multiple boxes, which is cheaper than last year's $19.99 / month package (Lifetime Service is still available as well). If you need more hard drive space, THX Certification or more tuners then you're also in luck, as price cuts are in order for the 1TB Premiere XL (down $50 to $249) and the 2TB Elite models (down $100 to $399). The new pricing should let multi-TiVo homes compete even better with cable company DVR offerings, and once the new multiroom boxes arrive this summer things should only get better. Stake out various online retailers or your local Best Buy to snag one or three on Sunday, but until then check out the press release after the break for all of the numbers.

Brett Ratner in Talks to Direct Midnight Run 2

Midnight Run is about to get Ratner-fied. Development on a sequel to the 1988 buddy action-comedy began in early 2010 when word came that Universal was working on a follow-up with star Robert De Niro attached to reprise his bounty hunter role from the original. Now comes word that Mr. Brett Ratner is in talks to direct the sequel and screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra) have been tapped to perform a rewrite. For those unfamiliar, the first film starred De Niro as a bounty hunter tasked with escorting an embezzler (Charles Grodin) across the country. Hit the jump for more on Midnight Run 2.

brett-ratner-image-2News of Ratner?s involvement with Midnight Run 2 comes courtesy of Deadline. As the man behind the Rush Hour franchise, Ratner certainly has experience with buddy comedies (albeit not good ones). He recently helmed the below-average comedy Tower Heist, and I?m not exactly hopeful that he?ll turn out a fun and exciting Midnight Run sequel. The involvement of Elliot and Lovett doesn?t raise my enthusiasm either; in addition to G.I. Joe they also wrote Four Brothers. The previous draft of the sequel was written by Timothy Dowling (Role Models, Knight and Day), and last we heard the story would involve teaming De Niro up with a ?younger comedic foil.? That ?old, curmudgeon cop/young, hip cop? dynamic is probably comedic gold to Ratner, but depending on whom they cast opposite De Niro we could be in for an incredibly boring ride.

I?m sincerely hoping for the best here, and I?d be more than happy to be pleasantly surprised, but I?m not necessarily holding my breath. We recently heard that Ratner may be directing a film chronicling the rise of MTV, and I?m genuinely enthused by that marriage of director and material. I Want My MTV is ways off from production, however, and Ratner is next set to direct Dwayne Johnson in Hercules later this year.

Living IN Nashville News You Can Use! | Nashville Home Inspection ...

Living IN Nashville Now, while the winter is still around, is the best time for homeowners ?to get a jump start on planning and prepping for their spring and summer home and garden projects; so when the weather really does warm up, it takes little effort to get the projects underway.

In addition to fine-tuning home improvement and gardening plans, it is also a good idea to make certain the required tools are in tip-top shape, so the projects are not delayed.

Here are some ways to prepare for the spring and summer seasons with just a few simple steps:

* Plans - Sketch out those garden plans, and pick the plants that can be purchased or grown from seed. Plans don?t need to be drawn to scale, but they?ll provide great background information for a shopping list. Research how early seedlings should be started, so they?ll be ready for transplant when the time arrives.

Also create plans for any home projects that need to be accomplished. The depth of those plans depends on how complicated the project is. Make certain all permits are in order, if required by the community; and if a contractor is needed, a formal agreement and timeline is in place prior to work commencing.

* Lawn tools - Check pruning shears for sharp blades ? and either sharpen or replace them if they don?t easily cut through a small stem of plant material. Also, review lawn mower blades. Check the oil, gasoline and starters on all gardening machinery to ensure they?ll run correctly when needed.

* House tools - A review of all home tools helps to determine if any new purchases ? or replacements are needed. This is the perfect time to head to the store and purchase missing tools, add new blades to saws or replenish the sandpaper stash ? eliminating wasted time running back and forth to the store.

* Hand tools - A little care can go a long way in keeping your hands and feet ? the most valuable tools found in every household ? in good shape after the long, dry winter months. These tools are vital to accomplishing everything on those garden and home project lists, and they are often forgotten. O?Keeffe?s Working Hands and O?Keeffe?s for Healthy Feet are both guaranteed to effectively relieve dry, cracked skin in even the most extreme cases. And just a little bit of the highly concentrated, hypoallergenic and odorless creams is needed. Start every project off with healthy hands, and keep them that way throughout the entire season of projects. It?s the best cream for dry hands ? especially after the long and dry winter months.

* Materials - As the project season gets closer, start purchasing the materials needed ahead of time. This helps to spread the cost out, and can give an idea of how much time and effort the project will take to be completed. Get started now in matching colors, finding the perfect accessories and even price-comparing between different suppliers to help save money.

For homeowners who haven?t experienced the warm-weather-project itch quite yet, it?s still a good idea to start thinking about those items on to-do lists to help with being prepared and ready to go when the season arrives. It doesn?t take a lot of energy to have a successful spring and summer project season. Don?t forget O?Keeffe?s Working Hands and O?Keeffe?s for Healthy Feet to keep hands and feet in healthy shape to tackle any job.

Builders slog ahead on a long road to recovery

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

The?home building industry is?slogging along on a path to recovery. But it will be awhile before the industry is back to what feels like ?normal.?

Permits to build?new homes closed in on the highest level in more than three years?in February, a sign that the housing market is slowly healing from the worst collapse since the Great Depression.? New building permits surged 5.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 717,000 units last month, the Commerce Department said?Tuesday.

The pickup in permits is a signal that builders are seeing stronger demand. Much of the new construction is geared toward multifamily housing, which jumped 21 percent last month as strong demand continues to push rents higher.

?This report is one of the more encouraging new construction reports we have seen in the last four years,? said Patrick Newport, an economist at IHS Global Insight. ?Still, as the Fed reminded us in its (policy) statement last Tuesday, the housing sector remains depressed.?

Single-family home construction faces a major headwind as the backlog of unsold existing homes continues to weigh on prices. Housing starts last month fell by 1.1 percent, depressed by a 9.9 percent drop in single-family homebuilding.

As often happens in winter, weather patterns around the country had an impact on the pace of building. Housing starts were up in the Midwest and South last month and down in West and Northeast.

Despite the steady gains, the homebuilding industry still has a long road back to the boom years, when starts peaked an annual rate of 2.3 million units. Falling home prices in many parts of the country have discouraged some would-be home buyers.

?The recovery in housing starts is still being hampered by stiff competition from foreclosures and short sales. Paul Diggle, a housing economist at Capital Economics

?Diggle estimates the pace of starts will continue to pick up this year, reaching an annual rate of 750,000 this year.

?That pickup in residential construction is expected to help boost to economic growth for the first time since 2005. While the direct impact of home building accounts for just 2.5 percent of gross domestic product, new home buying helps boost other industries from appliance manufacturing to landscaping.

?Economists estimate that for every one house built, about 2.5 jobs are created. Those new jobs also help create demand for homes, which helps push the homebuilding recovery forward,

"We are going to see housing (construction) add to GDP in 2012," said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut. "There is still a glut of existing homes in areas where there are a lot of foreclosures. But the supply of new homes is getting tighter so if there is sustained demand for them we could see construction continue."?

Higgs Boson: Found at Last?

Not all that long ago, the Tevatron particle accelerator, about 30 miles west of Chicago, was the biggest, baddest atom smasher on the planet. It slammed protons and antiprotons together by the trillions at nearly the speed of light to discover some of high-energy physics' greatest hits, including the top quark a host of other new particles. But it shut down last fall after 28 years of operation, the victim of budget cuts, even as the newer and more powerful Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, began churning out its own discoveries over in Europe.

But the Tevatron is still in the game, in a very big way: physicists analyzing data from some of the huge machine's final runs have uncovered evidence for the existence of the Higgs boson, a dreamed-of, talked-about, sought-after particle that has eluded physicists for more than 45 years. It's not the first evidence for the Higgs, which would tie the so-called Standard Model of Physics together with nice, tidy bow. It's not the strongest either: that came late last year, when scientists at the LHC announced an almost-but-not-quite detection that had the physics community humming. But the new findings are an independent, near-confirmation, and when you're talking about some of the trickiest, most complicated experiments ever carried out, that's hugely important. "Based on the current Tevatron data," says a paper describing the new analysis, "and results compiled through December 2011 by other experiments [meaning the LHC], "this is the strongest hint of the existence of a Higgs boson."

(PHOTOS: The Large Hadron Particle Collider)

Swell. So why is any of this important and what, for that matter, is the Higgs boson? The answer has to do with the masses of various subatomic particles, and those vary wildly. Protons are more massive than electrons, for example, and electrons are way more massive than neutrinos. Photons have no mass at all. For most us, that's no more than a fun fact (and not all that much fun, really). For physicists, though, it's a mystery that demands a solution. Why are the masses so different -- and why do any particles have any mass at all?

The answer, suggested several scientists back in the 1960's, is that the entire universe is suffused with a sort of energy field -- it's called the Higgs field, after the Scottish physicist Peter Higgs who first decribed it. The Higgs field is something like a cosmic molasses, and as particles slog through it, the resistance they encounter is what we measure as mass. Since stars, planets and people are made of those particles, the Higgs field is why we have mass as well.

For the Higgs field to do its magic, it has to ping the protons, electrons and the rest with its own proprietary particle known as the Higgs boson. If you can't find the boson, you can't prove the existence of the Higgs field -- and if you can't prove the Higgs field, you can't explain where mass comes from. So detecting the boson is no minor thing.

(LIST: Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2011)

By particle standards, the Higgs should be something of a bruiser. Physicists' calculations suggest it would be far more massive than any particle seen to date -- and please don't ask why the Higgs itself has mass. (OK, if you must, it's probably because the Higgs interacts with its eponymous field, just as any other particle does.)

To find the Higgs, you need a powerful accelerator that creates exceedingly powerful -- if exceedingly tiny -- explosions: the particles that condense out of the resulting blast of energy might just contain a Higgs or two. In December, two different detectors at the LHC, just outside Geneva, saw some evidence of the appearance of the Higgs -- in the form of so-called "bumps" in the data at around 124 or 126 billion electron volts (that's the unit of mass when you're talking about particles; a proton's mass is about a billion electron volts). This is in the range in which theorists suggested the Higgs might indeed be found, and while the detection wasn't considered definitive, it was at least highly suggestive.

(LIST: 10 Ideas That Are Changing Your Life)

The new report out of the Tevatron boasts a bump as well. The American version isn't as clear as the Europeans' due to the accelerator's relative weakness: it was somewhere between 115 and 135 billion electron volts. But since that's consistent with what the LHC saw, it bolsters the case that the Higgs may have been snagged at last.

The Tevatron won't be able to help much after this; the new analysis was pretty much the last heroic gasp of the out of the venerable machine. But plenty of Fermilab physicists are involved in LHC experiments all the same: the European machine even has a remote control room located at Fermilab headquarters. And while Tevatron has wound down, the LHC is just getting started. It's ramping up its power for the next round of proton-smashing, so if the Higgs is really there -- as physicists are now increasingly confident it is -- the signal should continue to get stronger and stronger until it's incontrovertible.

That may not take long, either. "I don't think there's any place for the Higgs to hide," Fermilab physicist Rob Roser told the Associated Press. "We'll know the answer one way or another by the end of 2012."

New species of deep-sea catshark described from the Galapagos

ScienceDaily (Mar. 7, 2012) ? Scientists conducting deep-sea research in the Galapagos have described a new species of catshark, Bythaelurus giddingsi, in the March 5 issue of the journal Zootaxa. The new shark is approximately a foot long and has a chocolate-brown coloration with pale, irregularly distributed spots on its body. The spotted patterns appear to be unique to each individual. John McCosker of the California Academy of Sciences collected the first specimens of this new catshark while diving to depths of 1,400 -- 1,900 feet aboard the Johnson Sea-Link submersible.

"The discovery of a new shark species is always interesting, particularly at this time when sharks are facing such incredible human pressure," said McCosker, Chair of Aquatic Biology at the Academy and lead author on the paper. "Many species have become locally rare and others verge on extinction due to their capture for shark-fin soup. The damage to food webs is dramatic, since sharks provide valuable ecological services as top-level predators -- when they disappear, their niche is often filled by other species that further imbalance ecosystems. Most deepwater shark species are not very susceptible to overfishing; however, since this catshark's range is restricted to the Galapagos, its population is likely limited in size, making it more susceptible than more widely distributed species."

The California Academy of Sciences sent its first scientific expedition to the Galapagos Islands in 1905 and has since organized dozens of return trips. As a result, the Academy is now home to the world's most comprehensive collection of scientific specimens from these famous islands. Most Academy field work in the Galapagos today focuses on the marine environment, where dozens of new species have been discovered in recent decades. In the 1990s, McCosker made a series of dives inside the submersible Johnson Sea-Link to explore the marine life on the islands' steep volcanic slopes and sandy bottoms. Submersibles allow scientists to explore a vast part of the Galapagos that was not accessible to Charles Darwin or earlier Academy scientists. It was during two such dives in 1995 and 1998 that McCosker collected the seven specimens used to describe B. giddingsi. Using research collections at the Academy and elsewhere as a basis for comparison, Academy Research Associate Douglas Long and Smithsonian Institution scientist Carole Baldwin worked with McCosker to confirm that the specimens did indeed represent a new species.

McCosker's marine research in the Galapagos was the subject of a 1996 Discovery Channel documentary called Galapagos: Beyond Darwin. The new shark is named in honor of award-winning filmmaker Al Giddings, who filmed and produced the Discovery Channel project and many more natural history films. McCosker's deep-sea research in the Galapagos is also highlighted within the Academy's Islands of Evolution exhibit, which opened in 2008.

Pujols 2 for 3 in Angels' debut

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:03 p.m. ET March 5, 2012

PHOENIX (AP) - His first time up to bat for the Angels, Albert Pujols hit an RBI double.

So far, so good.

The new Angels slugger finished 2 for 3, ending his spring debut by popping up with the bases loaded in the third inning of Los Angeles' 9-1 win over an Oakland Athletics split squad Monday.

"That was fun," Pujols said of batting in each of the first three innings. "Hopefully we get to do that a lot this season."

Left-hander C.J. Wilson, the Angels' other big free-agent acquisition, also debuted. He gave up a hit and walk in two innings.

Pujols agreed to a $240 million, 10-year deal over the winter, leaving the St. Louis Cardinals after 11 seasons.

Now he'll routinely face AL pitchers after hammering the senior circuit for more than a decade.

"When I made the ballclub in '01 I didn't know anyone in the National League," Pujols said. "You are your own scouting report."

Athletics starter Brad Peacock had to leave after getting five outs. He was scheduled for two innings. Pujols helped him reach his pitch count early.

"I tried not to look at him," Peacock said. "I was trying to hit my spot but left a curveball up for him and he crushed it."

Wilson, who came to California from the Texas Rangers, said he used to play fantasy baseball when he was in the minors - and drafted Pujols at least once.

"It's kind of funny," Wilson said. "He came up there and drive in the run and we all looked at each other in the dugout and said `Yep, that's Albert.' That's what he does.

"I'm happy to be in the Albert Pujols fan club."

NOTES: A's DH Manny Ramirez went 0-for-3 and is hitless in five plate appearances. He has seen a total of 11 pitches and had not hit a ball out of the infield until flying out weakly to right in the sixth. . Peacock struggled in his first start in his first major league camp, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk. Peacock was one of four players acquired from Washington for Gio Gonzalez on December 23. . Angels 2B Howie Kendrick homered to straightaway center in the second and C Chris Iannetta added a two-run shot in the third. . Athletics 1B Daric Barton received a second cortisone shot in his right shoulder and will be sidelines for the next three days. . Angels DH Bobby Abreu was slated to bat sixth but was scratched due to an undisclosed illness. He was replaced by Hank Conger, who hit ninth.

Iran says to let U.N. nuclear sleuths visit military site

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Tuesday it would let U.N. nuclear investigators visit a military complex where they had been refused access to check intelligence suggesting Tehran has pursued explosives research relevant to nuclear weapons.

Western diplomats dismissed Iran's statement as a time-buying gambit - rather than a genuine shift towards nuclear transparency - with Israel talking increasingly stridently of last-resort military action against its arch-enemy.

Diplomats cited a proviso in the statement saying that access to Parchin still hinged on a broader agreement on how to settle outstanding issues which the two sides have long been unable to reach - an impasse that has put the West and Tehran on a slippery slope towards confrontation.

The West has sharpened sanctions against Iran to block its oil exports, a defiant Tehran has threatened to shut Gulf oil shipping lanes in reprisal while Israel has signaled it is losing patience with efforts to isolate the Islamic Republic.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday that Israel has made no decision on attacking Iranian nuclear sites, sources close to talks in Washington said. He, however, gave no sign of backing away from possible military strikes.

Russia urged global powers on Tuesday to revive talks with Iran as soon as possible, saying an Iranian approach last month showed it was ready for serious negotiations. That perception is not shared by the United States, France and Britain. The last talks a year ago failed even to agree on an agenda.

EXPLOSIVES TESTS

An International Atomic Energy Agency report in November said that Iran had built a large containment chamber at Parchin, southeast of Tehran, to conduct high-explosives experiments that are "strong indicators" of an effort to design atomic bombs.

The IAEA requested access to Parchin during talks in Tehran in January and again in February, but the Iranian side refused.

"Considering the fact that Parchin is a military site, granting access is a time-consuming process and cannot be permitted repeatedly," Iran's delegation to the Vienna-based IAEA said in the statement.

It added that the "process could be ... started when the agreement on modalities is reached" - suggesting Tehran had not relaxed its insistence that there must first be an omnibus agreement on how to settle questions about the nature of Iran's nuclear work before an inspection trip to Parchin could happen.

Iranian diplomats and IAEA officials were not immediately available for comment.

Western suspicions about activities at Parchin date back to at least 2004, when a prominent nuclear expert assessed that satellite images showed it might be a site for research and experiments applicable to nuclear weapons.

IAEA inspectors did visit Parchin in 2005 but did not see the place where the U.N. watchdog now believes the explosives chamber was built.

Asked about Iran's statement, Western diplomats familiar with the matter told Reuters they saw an Iranian ploy to play for time, possibly to "sanitize" the Parchin site to eliminate any evidence of suspect activities before inspectors came.

One Western diplomat attending a meeting this week of the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors said the Iranian announcement was "nothing new, definitely not" a policy shift.

IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said on Monday the agency had "some indication that activities are ongoing at the Parchin site. It makes us believe that going there sooner is better than later."

He also said the IAEA continued to have "serious concern" about possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program. Iran says it is enriching uranium only for peaceful energy.

HISTORY OF FUTILE TALKS

There have been many prolonged, tortuous negotiations and procedural obstacles imposed by Iran since the IAEA first began seeking unfettered access in the country almost a decade ago to check indications of illicit military nuclear activity.

Diplomats say a broad deal on settling outstanding issues has been thwarted by Iran's refusal to let inspectors examine sites, peruse documents and question nuclear scientists cited in classified Western intelligence reports provided to the agency.

The IAEA named Parchin in a detailed report in November that lent independent weight to Western fears that Iran is working to develop an atomic bomb, an allegation Iranian officials deny, saying they are seeking only peaceful nuclear energy.

The report presented a trove of intelligence pointing to research activities in Iran of logical use in developing the means and technologies needed to assemble nuclear weapons, should it decide to do so.

At the IAEA governors meeting, the United States and its Western allies were seeking Russian and Chinese backing for a resolution against Iran to help isolate it over its failure to address the agency's growing concerns.

ISRAEL, U.S. DIFFER ON URGENCY OF THREAT

Israel has spoken of pre-emptive bombings against Iran, a hawkish approach that Obama - wary of the risk of igniting a new Middle East war and a global surge in oil prices as he seeks re-election in November - has tried to restrain Israel to give time for harsher sanctions and diplomatic pressure to bear fruit.

Obama and Netanyahu agreed on Monday to keep up coordination on Iran but continued to disagree on when the clock for non-military options to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons capability should run out.

The Jewish state insists that military action against Iran would be warranted to prevent it from reaching nuclear weapons capability, as opposed to when it actually builds a device. Washington has not embraced that idea.

"The pressure (on Iran) is growing but time is growing short," Netanyahu was quoted by aides as telling Obama.

Later, addressing the influential pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, Netanyahu said: "None of us can afford to wait much longer. As prime minister of Israel, I will never let my people live in the shadow of annihilation."

At the podium, he held up a copy of a 1944 letter from the U.S. War Department to world Jewish leaders turning down their request to bomb the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz.

Obama sought to reassure Netanyahu that Washington was keeping its own military option open as a last resort and "has Israel's back." He added: "We do believe there is still a window that allows for a diplomatic resolution to this issue."

Israel, believed to be the only nuclear weapons power in the Middle East, fears Iranian nuclear facilities may soon be buried so deep that they would be invulnerable to its bunker-busting bombs, which are less powerful than those in the U.S. arsenal.

U.S. officials say that while Iran may be maneuvering to keep its options open, there is no clear intelligence that it has made a final decision to "break out" with a nuclear weapon.

Spanking and genetics may increase childhood aggression

ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2012) ? A study co-authored by UT Dallas criminologist Dr. J.C. Barnes shows that the risk of problem behavior during childhood -- particularly for boys -- is greatly increased if children have genetic predispositions for these behaviors and if they are spanked by their parents.

"We found that genetic factors affect which children display aggressive behavior, but we also found that genetic factors matter more when children were exposed to spanking as a disciplinary tactic," said Barnes, an assistant professor of criminology in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences.

The study titled, "Physical Punishment and Childhood Aggression: The Role of Gender and Gene-Environment Interplay," was recently published in the journal Aggressive Behavior. The researchers examined data from children who were 9 months to 5 years old. The information was collected from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Birth Cohort.

Barnes said the researchers found a link between genetic predisposition and environmental influences -- in this case, spanking -- only in boys.

"It did not affect females," he said. "Males who were spanked and had the highest genetic risks displayed the most aggressive behavior compared to other males."

Acts of aggression included temper tantrums and disruptive behavior, for example. Barnes said the researchers have been studying childhood levels of aggression to see how and why they are influenced by genetic risks. Genetic risk was measured by utilizing what is known as the twin methodology, a study design that allows for the comparison of twin concordance as a way to identify heritable influences on a trait.

The study's findings could be an indicator of when interventions may be most beneficial, Barnes said.

"Since we're tracing back to early childhood, which is a formative time, that suggests interventions could be targeted to that early time point in the life course," he said. "The targeted intervention may be to reduce spanking across the board."

The study was co-authored by Dr. Courtney Franklin at Sam Houston State University and Dr. Kevin M. Beaver at Florida State University.

Emilio Masella: Rooting For Snooki Miscarriage!

Count Snooki's ex-boyfriend Emilio Masella among the millions upon millions who worry that the world is by no means ready for a mini-Snooki spawn.

Still, who the heck says this:

"I hope for her sake ... not to be rude or anything ... but I hope she has a miscarriage." Well then, tell us how you really feel there, Emilio.

Emilio and Snooki

Emilio says hearing that Jionni LaValle got Snooki pregnant is scary: "When I was with her, she said she wanted twins. She would always say 'Let’s have twins.'"

"I would def recommend her to get a paternity test to see who the father is because I’m sure there are other subjects ... Vinny could easily be the father."

Hey, Emilio said it, not us.

As for whether Snooki, who is not only pregnant, but engaged to Jionni LaValle, will marry her man? Yes, Emilio says, but Snook will "pull a Kim Kardashian."

Someone's going to be getting a cease and desist letter REAL quick.

Speaking of which, lawyers for Snook (real name Nicole Polizzi) apparently sent a legal threat to Emilio, ordering him not to bash her. Clearly that worked.

A month before he made this miscarriage comment, he told another media outlet he could be Snooki's baby daddy too ... implying he recently nailed her.

The comment didn't sit so well with her attorneys, who responded with a cease and desist letter, threatening to sue if he continued to blab about Snook.

Her lawyers were pretty clear:

"Demand is hereby made that you cease and desist making public statements regarding Ms. Polizzi that could in any way be taken to be offensive by her."

A month later ... Emilio hopes she miscarries. Pretty offensive, no?
