Home Painting Company, Painting Contract - Walnut Creek Home ...

A Walnut Creek home painting company, like Custom Painting, Inc., can give your home a new look. When a huge remodel is out of the question or simply not needed, a touch of paint can go a long way to improve the look and aesthetics of a home. There are a number of things individuals should think about when it comes time to paint their home. Below are some things to consider when choosing to paint your home.

Price: One of the first things that should be discussed is price. It is important to know how much money one will be charged before agreeing to a job. Discovering that the cost of the job is way more than one expected it to be, after the fact, can be pretty upsetting. Determine the cost as early in the process as possible and then weed out those Walnut Creek home painting companies that are too expensive.

Personal Style: It is also important to determine and incorporate one's own personal style. This will impact everything from the color of the paint to its design. It may not be appropriate to give full vent to one's own style but it should definitely be given consideration. It should also be incorporated in some manner.

Neighborhood: It is always a good idea to think about one's neighbors before choosing the paint and the style. Avoid garish looks that would cause a home to stick out in a bad way. While it is perfectly fine to incorporate a person's own personal style or at least aspects of it, giving a home a Halloween theme might be too much, even if the homeowner is a Halloween buff and thinks it is a great idea. It's not necessary to cow-tow to the neighbors but it is a good idea to be respectful.

Association Rules: Some neighborhoods will have association rules. These rules may govern what colors a homeowner can and cannot have their home painted. Homeowners will need to determine what these rules are and make sure that they abide by them. If they fail to do so, they may end up re-paying to get their house painted, if they hadn't chosen an approved paint color, style, etc.

When choosing a Walnut Creek home painting company remember it's important to seek out a quality one. Timeliness, quality work and affordability are all important traits. When making decisions regarding the actual paint job, considerations concerning price, personal style, the neighbors and association rules, are all very important to consider as well.

Teens' love of loud music tied to drinking, drug abuse - KPTM FOX ...

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, May 21 (HealthDay News) -- In a new study, teens who loved listening to music blasting at high decibels on their MP3 players were also more likely than others to smoke marijuana, while those who listened to loud music at concerts and clubs were more likely to drink heavily and have sex without a condom.

Experts stressed that the findings don't prove that loud music or concerts have anything to do with pot smoking, drinking or unprotected sex, only that there is an association.

"These risk-taking behaviors do go together, but listening to loud music does not cause drug use and drug use does not cause loud-music listening," said Valerie Stratton, an associate professor emerita of psychology at Penn State Altoona. She was not involved in the new study

Still, Stratton said, a better understanding of how various behaviors work together could help researchers develop ways to prevent young people from hurting their health. "The message may be to consider all aspects of this adolescent lifestyle when trying to intervene or work with these high-risk individuals," she said.

The Dutch researchers launched the study to understand the connection between types of music-listening and behaviors considered to be unsafe.

"When adolescents take one risk, they also tend to take other risks," explained study author Ineke Vogel, a researcher at Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam. "So, if you want to prevent them from performing such risky behaviors or want them to stop or reduce such behaviors, you best address them together in one integrated program."

In the new study, researchers got competed surveys from 944 young people aged 15 to 25 -- average age 18 -- in an inner-city neighborhood in the Netherlands. Almost two-thirds of the participants were female, and two-thirds weren't of Dutch heritage but instead Moroccan, Turkish or of other ethnicities.

Those who listened to levels of music on MP3 players that the researchers considered risky -- about 30 percent of those who replied to the survey -- were more likely to smoke pot.

Why? The study authors have a theory: "The combination of cannabis use and risky MP3-player listening could be related to the existential period in life that constitutes adolescence and emerging adulthood, not only because of the positive feeling to be alive and the experience of existential meaning, but also as something that can fill existential emptiness."

Those who listened to loud music at concerts and clubs -- about 48 percent of the total -- were more likely to binge drink and inconsistently use condoms during intercourse.

Overall, a third said they smoked, a third said they'd engaged in binge drinking within the past month, 13 percent said they'd recently smoked pot and about 38 percent said they hadn't always used condoms during sex.

Study co-author Alex Burdorf, a professor of determinants of population health at Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, said the findings offer insight into how the things that young people do are interconnected. "From a prevention point of view, we would focus on general strategies on how to cope with temptations and try to teach these risk groups how to achieve this," Burdorf said.

The study appears in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics.

Elusive quasiparticles realized

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? In quantum physics physical processes in condensed matter and other many-body systems can often be described with quasiparticles. In Innsbruck, for the first time Rudolf Grimm's team of physicists has succeeded in experimentally realizing a new quasiparticle -- a repulsive polaron -- in an ultracold quantum gas.

The scientists have published their results in the online issue of the journal Nature.

Ultracold quantum gases are an ideal experimental model system to simulate physical phenomena in condensed matter. In these gases, many-body states can be realized under highly controlled conditions and interactions between particles are highly tuneable. A research group led by Wittgenstein awardee Rudolf Grimm and START awardee Florian Schreck have now realized and comprehensively analyzed repulsive polarons for the first time. The scientists from the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck are international leaders in this field of research.

Elusive partners

To realize repulsive polarons experimentally, Rudolf Grimm and his research team produce an ultracold quantum gas consisting of lithium and potassium atoms in a vacuum chamber. They control particle interaction with electromagnetic fields, and by applying radio-frequency pulses they then drive the potassium atoms into a state where they repulse the surrounding lithium atoms. This complex state can be described physically as quasiparticle because, in various ways, it behaves like a new particle with modified properties. By analyzing the whole energy spectrum of the system, the researchers were able to demonstrate repulsive polarons.

"This way we were able to realize and analyze not only attractive but also repulsive polarons," says Prof Grimm. While attractive polarons have been studied before, the quantum physicist and his team have entered a completely new scientific field with these novel repulsive quasiparticles.

Ideal observation platform

In condensed matter these quasiparticles decay very quickly, which makes it nearly impossible to study them. But also in quantum gases the repulsive properties present difficulties: "Polarons can only exist in a metastable state," explains Rudolf Grimm "and their lifetime is crucial for our ability to investigate them at all. We were surprised to find that our polarons showed an almost ten times increased lifetime compared to earlier experiments in similar systems. Our experimental set-up, therefore, provides an ideal platform for a detailed analysis of many-body states that rely on repulsive interactions."

As a next step the Innsbruck researchers are going to investigate whether separate domains where only lithium or only potassium atoms accumulate are created in a quantum gas consisting of repulsive particles. "This has been suggested in theoretical models but only now we will are able to investigate it experimentally."

The experiment was carried out in close cooperation with two theoretical physicists from Denmark and Spain and is financially supported by the Austrian Science Fund within the Special Research Program FoQuS.

Red Bulls are an odd bunch

6. Houston Dynamo ??A win and two draws over eight days is commendable for a club with so much going on. The stadium is open, the hard road slog is behind them and Dominic Kinnear?s team even has a little breathing room for a few days. Now, the season can really start.

5. New York Red Bulls ??It?s just hard to make sense of these crazy kids. Few teams are as beat up, and yet this is Major League Soccer?s hottest team (statistically speaking) with five wins in a row. We know what they are saying around Red Bull Arena: ?Why ask why? Just keep the party going!? Heath Pearce debuted at center back in the latest victory, Saturday over Montreal (while playing a man down for half an hour, no less.)

4. D.C. United ??Two home games brought two fairly comfortable wins (over Colorado and Toronto). Dwayne De Rosario is on one of his signature tears with three goals in Round 11. And don?t look now, rest of league, but Andy Najar and previously muted DP striker Hamdi Salihi are starting to feel it.

3. San Jose Earthquakes ??Alan Gordon (pictured) to the rescue. Again! For the second consecutive week, the ?Quakes fell behind at home to a side they probably shouldn?t have (this time to Columbus). And for the second consecutive week, Gordon came off the bench to strike late, helping his side split the points. It?s exciting, but clearly the Buck Shaw bunch would like better on home grass.

2. Seattle Sounders ??Everyone gets excited about bicycle kick goals, and I get it. They?re cool and all. But what gets my little soccer shorts going are goals like Fredy Montero?s late equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Vancouver. The ability to make space and then to perfectly, skillfully draw a curling arc with the ball around a stranded, helpless goalkeeper? Yeah, that does it for me. (And it?s the kind of goal that Montero manufactures from time to time, hardly his first artistic maneuver.)

1. Real Salt Lake ??Unbeaten in five and well-rested (idle in Round 11) ahead of a home match this weekend? Yeah, the Western Conference leaders will certainly take that. They probably will have to deal with the absence of midfielder Kyle Beckerman and goalkeeper Nick Rimando (although it?s possible Rimando could be released back to the club.)

Psychological Science explains uproar over prostate-cancer screenings

WASHINGTON The uproar that began last year when the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force stated that doctors should no longer offer regular prostate-cancer tests to healthy men continued this week when the task force released their final report. Overall, they stuck to their guns, stating that a blood test commonly used to screen for prostate cancer, the PSA test, causes more harm than good it leads men to receive unnecessary, and sometimes even dangerous, treatments.

But many people simply don't believe that the test is ineffective. Even faced with overwhelming evidence, such as a ten-year study of around 250,000 men that showed the test didn't save lives, many activists and medical professionals are clamoring for men to continue receiving their annual PSA test. Why the disconnect?

In an article published in Psychological Science, a publication of the Association for Psychological Science, researchers Hal R. Arkes, of Ohio State University, and Wolfgang Gaismaier, from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany, picked apart laypeople's reactions to the report, and examined the reasons why people are so reluctant to give up the PSA test.

"Many folks who had a PSA test and think that it saved their life are infuriated that the Task Force seems to be so negative about the test," said Arkes.

They suggest several factors that may have contributed to the public's condemnation of the report. Many studies have shown that anecdotes have power over a person's perceptions of medical treatments. For example, a person can be shown statistics that Treatment A works less frequently than Treatment B, but if they read anecdotes (such as comments on a website) by other patients who had success with Treatment B, they'll be more likely to pick Treatment B. The source of the anecdotes matters too. If a friend, a close relative, or any trusted source received successful treatment, they would be more likely to recommend that treatment to others, even if there was evidence showing the treatment only works for a minority of people.

Arkes and Gaismaier also propose that the public may have recoiled against the task force's recommendations so fiercely because they weren't able to properly evaluate the data in the report. Confusion over the use of control groups may have led people in the general public to weigh the data differently than medical professionals did.

"How to change this is the million-dollar question," said Arkes. "Pictorial displays are far easier to comprehend than statistics. The two figures in our article depict the situation more clearly than text and numbers can do. I think data displayed in this manner can help change people's view of the PSA test because we compare the relative outcomes of being tested and not being tested. Without that comparison, it is tough for the public to appreciate the relative pluses and minuses of the PSA test versus not having the PSA test."

Men will be able to continue to request the PSA test, and it will be covered by health insurance for the foreseeable future. But psychological science suggests that unless people are convinced to choose statistics over anecdotes, confusion surrounding the test's effectiveness will linger.

John Tortorella Rips Devils: Rangers Coach Defends Brandon Prust, Takes Shot At New Jersey (VIDEO)

NEW YORK -- John Tortorella stood out again at a playoff news conference. Only this time it was because of his feistiness toward the New Jersey Devils and not for his brevity and contentiousness with the media.

The New York Rangers coach defended forward Brandon Prust, who could be facing a suspension because of an elbow to the head of New Jersey defenseman Anton Volchenkov, and accused the Devils of embellishing to draw penalties against the Rangers in the Eastern Conference finals.

"We tell our players, `Don't stay down on the ice. Get up,'" Tortorella said Sunday. "I'll leave it at that. If we want to start discussing officials with the media, I have a long list here."

He then began to air it.

Tortorella said the Devils set picks during power plays to set up shots for Ilya Kovalchuk and prevent the Rangers from getting into position to block them. He added that forward Dainius Zubrus elbowed New York defenseman Anton Stralman on Saturday, and said top New Jersey forward Zach Parise launched himself into another defenseman, Michael Del Zotto.

Neither of those players, nor Prust, was penalized for their hits during the Rangers' 3-0 win that gave New York a 2-1 lead in the East finals.

Kovalchuk scored a power-play goal in Game 2 that the Rangers say was made possible by a pick.

"We're trying not to get picked," Rangers forward Brad Richards said. "Sometimes you get picked. We're trying to let the refs know and have them look at it."

Prust had a chance to present his version of the hit during a telephone hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Sunday morning.

"I was able to talk quite a bit and explain where I was coming from," Prust said. "I was just trying to get into that check, I was at the end of a shift, just skating over for a routine check, I just wanted to rub him out and get off the ice.

"He bailed out of it and turned and kind of went low. It's just kind of a reaction. When you're off-balance, your arms go up, I didn't want to do a face plant into the boards. It was just kind of a reaction, I had no intent to hit him in the head there. There was nothing vicious about it."

Prust's elbow connected with the back of Volchenkov's helmet near the boards at 2:38 of the second period. Volchenkov stayed down for a bit, but remained in the game and didn't miss a shift.

Game 4 is Monday night in New Jersey, and the Rangers might have to take the ice without Prust.

"I have no clue really," Prust said when asked if he thought he would be suspended. "I know I've played a lot of professional hockey games and never been suspended before, I don't even think I had an elbowing penalty this year, so I'm sure they'll take that into account. I didn't even really feel that elbow. I went to the bench and thought maybe I caught him with my knee, maybe charley-horsed him.

"I didn't hit him that hard, I think I just kind of grazed his helmet a little bit, and it stood up. For sure he's trying to get a penalty when your helmet comes up. It's just natural to try to sell it for a power play."

Not surprisingly, Devils coach Peter DeBoer saw it quite differently.

"Headhunting. Plain and simple," he said Saturday.

Prust wasn't fazed a bit by DeBoer's characterization.

"I'm not really too worried about what he has to say," Prust said. "He's not my coach."

This is just the latest banter between the Devils and Rangers and their respective head coaches.

Tensions erupted on March 19 in the final regular-season meeting between the Atlantic Division rivals, when DeBoer had enforcers Cam Janssen, Eric Boulton and Ryan Carter in the starting lineup, and Tortorella countered with a physical lineup of Prust, Mike Rupp and Stu Bickel.

The game began with those six players engaging in fights.

DeBoer said Tortorella's remarks on Sunday were, "comical."

"Calling Prust a head hunter is unnecessary," Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. "He has been a pretty honest player his whole career."

Tortorella backed up Prust on Sunday, saying he didn't feel the hit warranted a suspension. He also noted that Prust has never faced disciplinary action in his five NHL seasons.

"Prust has played probably 300-plus games without any hearing, anything going on with him," he said. "He's probably one of the most honest players.

"Maybe if our players stayed down on the ice, we'll get something."

If Prust is unavailable, the Rangers could have Brandon Dubinsky back in the lineup for the first time since Game 7 of the first-round series against Ottawa, when he injured his right foot or ankle. Dubinsky skated with his teammates while wearing a contact jersey during Sunday's optional practice.

Another possibility is Mats Zuccarello, who has been sidelined since March 23 with a broken wrist.

"I don't know what I'm going to with the lineup," Tortorella said. "I don't think he should be suspended, so I really haven't gone that far."

Whether Tortorella's comments were fueled by anger or gamesmanship, the fiery coach wasn't about to sit back and have one of his players attacked at this critical juncture of the playoffs.

"We pride ourselves on playing hard between the whistles," Staal said. "We don't have guys on our team that dive and try to embellish."

New York is looking to grab its first two-game lead in the playoffs. The Rangers were forced to seven games in the first two rounds by Ottawa and Washington, and would like to bring a 3-1 edge home to Madison Square Garden for Game 5 on Wednesday night.

The Devils could have a few new looks on Monday night, too. New Jersey is on the verge of getting forward Jacob Josefson into the lineup for the first time in the playoffs. Josefson, who practiced on a line with Alexei Ponikarovsky and David Clarkson on Sunday, has been out since he broke his left wrist on April 3.

"Coach told me I'm playing, and I'm very ready to go," Josefson said. "It feels great. My body feels great. It may be a little tough stepping in, but I'm a little more excited than anything. I've been getting better every day and I felt I could play in this series. It's just a matter of when. I just hope I do well."

Josefson's return will likely force out struggling veteran Petr Sykora, who practiced with the extra players on Sunday.

"He finished the season very strong," DeBoer said of Josefson. "The last three, four weeks of the season he was great. Fresh legs this time of year, you're 15 games into a playoff run, can never hurt. He's been an effective guy for us, and we missed him while he was out."

DeBoer also tinkered with his lines and split up the high-powered duo of Kovalchuk and Parise.

"I was everywhere today," Kovalchuk said.

Zubrus took Kovalchuk's place at right wing alongside Parise and Travis Zajac. Kovalchuk, who has played right wing since Nov. 2 against Toronto, went back to left wing on a line with Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias.

"We got shut out and we're trying to generate some offense," DeBoer said. "It's been a general procedure for us to move some people around. The easy thing would be to stick with what we had, but we decided to shuffle some things around and hopefully we'll get results from it. Zubrus with Parise and Kovalchuk, they've had some chemistry in the past, prior to me even getting here. I hope that can translate to some chances."

(AP) ? For Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it was quite a week ? from birthday, to IPO, to I DO.

A day after the historic Facebook stock offering, Zuckerberg on Saturday wed 27-year-old Priscilla Chan, his girlfriend of nearly a decade, according to a guest authorized to speak for the couple. The person spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

Zuckerberg gave his new bride a ring he had designed with a "very simple ruby" to end an incredibly eventful week, according to the guest.

The couple married at his Palo Alto, Calif. home in front of fewer than 100 stunned guests who thought they would be attending a party to celebrate Chan's graduation from medical school.

On Monday, Zuckerberg turned 28 and Chan graduated from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, where she'd studied pediatrics.

Then on Friday, Zuckerberg took his blue-and-white web behemoth public in one of the most anticipated IPOs in Wall Street history.

The seemingly well-coordinated timing was largely a coincidence, the guest said. The wedding had been planned for months and the couple was waiting for Chan to finish medical school, but the date of the IPO was a "moving target" not known when the wedding was set.

Attendees, including Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, were told after they arrived that they were not mere party guests but wedding guests.

"Everybody was shocked," the guest said.

The person would not discuss the names of others who attended to protect their privacy.

Ditching his trademark hoodie and sneakers, Zuckerberg sported a dark blue suit and tie with a white shirt for the ceremony, while Chan wore a traditional white wedding dress with veil and lace.

Food was served family-style and included dishes from the couple's favorite Palo Alto sushi restaurant.

Zuckerberg met Chan at Harvard, where he founded Facebook in a dorm room in 2004, and have been together for more than nine years.

Chan's own Facebook page, which now lists her as married to the founder, said she is a native of Braintree, Mass., and attended high school in nearby Quincy.

She graduated Harvard in 2007 then taught science to fourth and fifth graders at the Harker School in San Jose for two years before starting medical school, according to her profile.

Her page also says she "loves cooking and soft things."

Even after the IPO, Zuckerberg, who grew up in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., remains Facebook's single largest shareholder, with 503.6 million shares, and he controls the company with 56 percent of its voting stock.

The site has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people and made its founder, Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2010, one of the most famous businessmen of the Internet age.

SpaceX rocket Falcon 9 at Cape Canaveral in Florida was scheduled to launch Saturday morning, but aborted just before liftoff.

Moments after ignition, a privately funded spacecraft aborted its liftoff, delaying its mission to the International Space Station.

SpaceX's unmanned rocket had a one-second window to take off from Cape Canaveral in Florida on Saturday morning, and the failed launch means the next opportunity won't be until early Tuesday morning.

The founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk, had been tweeting from the company's California headquarters leading up to the scheduled launch time of 4:55 a.m. ET.

"Whatever happens today, we could not have done it without @NASA, but errors are ours alone and me most of all," he said.

The successful launch would have been just the beginning in a series of tests for the private spacecraft.

The Dragon capsule, perched atop the Falcon 9 rocket, would become the first commercial spacecraft to visit the International Space Station. Even after it eventually launches, though, it will be a few days ? filled with more trials ? before the Dragon can berth.

?

Update at 10:04 a.m. ET. Shutdown A Half-Second To Launch:

As the AP reports, it was the Falcon 9's onboard computers that shut the operation down with just a half-second to launch.

Even NASA's most seasoned launch commentator was taken off-guard.

"Three, two, one, zero and liftoff," announced commentator George Diller, his voice trailing as the rocket failed to budge. "We've had a cutoff. Liftoff did not occur."

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell confirmed Elon Musk's earlier tweet that the high-combustion chamber pressure in engine No. 5 was to blame for the shutdown. Technicians are investigating further; if they need it, there's a spare engine available.

Update at 7:10 a.m. ET. 'Revving The Engines':

In a briefing after the launch attempt, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell likened the process to a commercial pilot revving the plane's engines before taking off.

"We were revving the engines, looking at the gauges, and we decided not to fly," she said.

She also said that the required wait time between launches has to do with the trajectory of the space station. The next chance to launch will be either 3:44 a.m. ET on Tuesday or 3:22 a.m. on Wednesday.

Update at 5:22 a.m. ET. What Happened?:

Musk gives an indication of what prevented the launch via Twitter: "slightly high combustion chamber pressure on engine 5. Will adjust limits for countdown in a few days." NASA says, "the teams will continue to look at the data and assess a launch attempt on May 22." NASA will host a briefing at 6:30 a.m. ET on NASA TV.

Our Original Post Continues:

According to SpaceX, it will take just under 10 minutes for the capsule to reach its preliminary orbit. On Day 2, Dragon will orbit Earth on its way to the space station. Before docking, which should happen on Day 4, it has to perform a series of tests and maneuvers to check whether it's ready for contact. SpaceX says:

"NASA decides if Dragon is allowed to attempt to berth with the station. If so, Dragon approaches; it is captured by [the] station's robotic arm and attached to the station. This requires extreme precision even as both Dragon and station orbit the Earth every 90 minutes."

This mission will involve only nonessential cargo, so the six astronauts aboard the space station will be able to get by if they don't get the goods.

After about two weeks, Dragon should detach and come back to Earth with a splash in the Pacific.

The mission presents challenges from start to finish, The Christian Science Monitor says.

"The mission is technically demanding ? cramming into one orbital outing an agenda that the Gemini program in the 1960s took several missions to accomplish."

A successful mission would set quite a precedent, too. NPR's Nell Greenfieldboyce reported on the private infusion in the space business Friday:

"The highly anticipated mission could mark the beginning of what some say could be a new era in spaceflight, with private companies operating taxi services that could start taking people to orbit in just a few years."

So far only Europe, Russia, Japan and the U.S. have sent spacecraft to the space station.

"There's no question this is a historic flight," SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said at a news conference Friday, as reported by the AP.

It won't be the only first for SpaceX, either, as NASA notes. It launched the same rocket and spacecraft in 2010, becoming "the first private organization to launch and recover a spacecraft from Earth orbit."

SpaceX says the capsule is designed to hold both cargo and people. The AP says the company will stick to supplies for now, but "within three or four years, the goal is to have astronauts on board so Americans no longer have to hitch expensive rides on Russian rockets."

The NASA space shuttle program ended last summer with the launch of Atlantis. At that point, NASA turned to the private sector for delivery duties, the AP says. SpaceX has been working closely with NASA to prepare for this mission, all the while working through cultural differences between the entities, Greenfieldboyce reports.

One thing both NASA and SpaceX agree on, the AP says, is that this is a test flight. SpaceX says:

"If any aspect of the mission is not successful, SpaceX will learn from the experience and try again."

Georgia woman learns toll of flesh-eating bacteria

They warned she would likely lose her other foot and both hands. (AP Photo/Copeland Family)

(AP) ? Faced with the prospect of losing both hands and her one remaining foot, a young Georgia woman battling to survive a case of flesh-eating bacteria that has already claimed one leg mouthed the words "Let's do this."

Aimee Copeland, 24, "shed no tears, she never batted an eyelash," her father, Andy Copeland, wrote on Facebook on Friday about the conversation he and his wife had with their daughter the day before.

"I was crying because I am a proud father of an incredibly courageous young lady," Copeland wrote.

It was not immediately clear whether the surgeries had already been performed and a post to a blog about the woman's progress Friday evening simply said "Aimee is doing well today. Her vital signs are as positive as her spirit."

A hospital spokeswoman referred questions to the father's online post.

The story of Copeland's battle to survive has inspired an outpouring of support from around the world. The University of West Georgia student developed a rare condition called necrotizing fasciitis after suffering a deep cut in her leg in a May 1 fall from a homemade zip line over the Little Tallapoosa River.

She has been hospitalized in critical condition at an Augusta hospital, battling kidney failure and other organ damage. She had been on a breathing tube until recently, when doctors performed a tracheotomy, her father said.

Until Thursday, Aimee Copeland did not know the full extent of her condition, only that her hands were badly infected.

Andy Copeland said he told his daughter about what had happened since the accident, how her one leg had been amputated. Doctors had once characterized her survival as "slim to none."

"We told her of the outpouring of love from across the world," her father said. "We told her that the world loved and admired her. We explained that she had become a symbol of hope, love and faith. Aimee's eyes widened and her jaw dropped. She was amazed."

In Copeland's case, the necrotizing fasciitis was caused by bacteria known as Aeromonas hydrophila, which is found in warm rivers and streams. Many people exposed to the bacteria don't get sick. Only a handful of necrotizing fasciitis infections caused by the bacteria have been reported in medical journals in recent decades.

Under the condition, the bacteria emit toxins that destroy muscle, fat and skin tissue.

Andy Copeland said he learned Thursday that doctors wanted to amputate his daughter's hands and remaining foot. Doctors were concerned she could develop respiratory problems and if her hands released an infection in her body there was a risk she could become septic again, her father said.

"We had a window of opportunity to perform the amputations and have a successful outcome," he said. "As they usually do, the doctors were presenting us with a medical no-brainer. We had to do what is necessary to save Aimee's life."

At that point, the family decided to share the situation with their daughter.

Copeland said he showed his daughter her hands, told her they were not healthy and were hampering her progress.

"Aimee, I do not want anything to happen to you," Copeland said he told his daughter. "Your mind is beautiful, your heart is good and your spirit is strong. These hands can prevent your recovery from moving forward. The doctors want to amputate them and your foot today to assure your best possible chance of survival."

Aimee Copeland nodded her understanding.

Her father explained that she would eventually be fitted with prosthetics to help her get around and she nodded again.

Then she smiled, raised her hands up and looked at the damage. She then turned to her family, gathered by her bedside and mouthed the words: "Let's do this."

Her father said he left the room with tears in his eyes.

"I wasn't crying because Aimee was going to lose her hands and foot, I was crying because, in all my 53 years of existence, I have never seen such a strong display of courage," Copeland said.

We're crossing our fingers and toes so hard we can barely type and walk, since it looks like the oft-delayed Dragon launch will take place tomorrow. SpaceX founder Elon Musk confirmed that the company had passed final launch review with NASA and that everything was set for the Falcon 9 to lift off at 4:15AM ET on May 19th. The lift-off will be broadcast live from the official website and is on course to be the first private spaceflight to dock and deliver essential supplies to the International Space Station. For our part? We wish the craft (and the ground crew) all the best and hope it's a perfect flight -- we wanna stay in a space hotel sooner rather than later.

Update (05/19): At around 5:06AM ET, Elon Musk tweeted that the launch had been aborted due to high combustion chamber pressure around Engine 5. It won't be leaving for another couple of days.

CA woman gets life for murder of millionaire lover

(AP) ? A Southern California woman was sentenced to life in prison Friday for helping her lover, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki, murder her live-in millionaire boyfriend for financial gain nearly two decades ago.

Nanette Ann Packard, 46, was convicted of murder earlier this year in the cold case slaying of William Francis McLaughlin, who made his fortune in medical technologies and was shot dead in his kitchen in December 1994.

Packard was living with the much older McLaughlin when he was murdered, but the divorced mother of two was also dating Naposki, a former linebacker for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts who worked as a bouncer at a nearby nightclub.

Packard convinced Naposki to kill McLaughlin, gave him a key to the victim's house and told him when he would be home, prosecutors said.

She stood to collect $1 million on a life insurance policy and receive $150,000 and free rent for a year at one of his homes if McLaughlin died, authorities said.

Packard ended up stealing at least $500,000 from McLaughlin's estate both before and after his death, Matt Murphy, deputy district attorney, said during trial.

She pleaded guilty to grand theft in 1996 and was sentenced to a year in jail, but the murder case went cold.

Investigators long suspected Packard and Naposki, however, and new technology to identify the weapon along with a new witness allowed prosecutors to file murder charges in 2009, prosecutors have said.

McLaughlin's adult daughters spoke at the sentencing hearing Friday in Orange County Superior Court.

"The fact that you, Nanette, destroyed so many lives, including my Dad's, is vile. ... You had absolutely no right to take him from us for your own selfish reasons. He was incredibly good to you for four whole years," said daughter Kim McLaughlin Bayless.

Naposki, 45, was convicted of first-degree murder last July.

His sentencing has been postponed until Aug. 10.
