Midnight Run is about to get Ratner-fied. Development on a sequel to the 1988 buddy action-comedy began in early 2010 when word came that Universal was working on a follow-up with star Robert De Niro attached to reprise his bounty hunter role from the original. Now comes word that Mr. Brett Ratner is in talks to direct the sequel and screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra) have been tapped to perform a rewrite. For those unfamiliar, the first film starred De Niro as a bounty hunter tasked with escorting an embezzler (Charles Grodin) across the country. Hit the jump for more on Midnight Run 2.
I?m sincerely hoping for the best here, and I?d be more than happy to be pleasantly surprised, but I?m not necessarily holding my breath. We recently heard that Ratner may be directing a film chronicling the rise of MTV, and I?m genuinely enthused by that marriage of director and material. I Want My MTV is ways off from production, however, and Ratner is next set to direct Dwayne Johnson in Hercules later this year.

The?home building industry is?slogging along on a path to recovery. But it will be awhile before the industry is back to what feels like ?normal.?
Permits to build?new homes closed in on the highest level in more than three years?in February, a sign that the housing market is slowly healing from the worst collapse since the Great Depression.? New building permits surged 5.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 717,000 units last month, the Commerce Department said?Tuesday.
The pickup in permits is a signal that builders are seeing stronger demand. Much of the new construction is geared toward multifamily housing, which jumped 21 percent last month as strong demand continues to push rents higher.
?This report is one of the more encouraging new construction reports we have seen in the last four years,? said Patrick Newport, an economist at IHS Global Insight. ?Still, as the Fed reminded us in its (policy) statement last Tuesday, the housing sector remains depressed.?
Single-family home construction faces a major headwind as the backlog of unsold existing homes continues to weigh on prices. Housing starts last month fell by 1.1 percent, depressed by a 9.9 percent drop in single-family homebuilding.
As often happens in winter, weather patterns around the country had an impact on the pace of building. Housing starts were up in the Midwest and South last month and down in West and Northeast.
Despite the steady gains, the homebuilding industry still has a long road back to the boom years, when starts peaked an annual rate of 2.3 million units. Falling home prices in many parts of the country have discouraged some would-be home buyers.
?The recovery in housing starts is still being hampered by stiff competition from foreclosures and short sales. Paul Diggle, a housing economist at Capital Economics
?Diggle estimates the pace of starts will continue to pick up this year, reaching an annual rate of 750,000 this year.
?That pickup in residential construction is expected to help boost to economic growth for the first time since 2005. While the direct impact of home building accounts for just 2.5 percent of gross domestic product, new home buying helps boost other industries from appliance manufacturing to landscaping.
?Economists estimate that for every one house built, about 2.5 jobs are created. Those new jobs also help create demand for homes, which helps push the homebuilding recovery forward,
"We are going to see housing (construction) add to GDP in 2012," said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut. "There is still a glut of existing homes in areas where there are a lot of foreclosures. But the supply of new homes is getting tighter so if there is sustained demand for them we could see construction continue."?

Not all that long ago, the Tevatron particle accelerator, about 30 miles west of Chicago, was the biggest, baddest atom smasher on the planet. It slammed protons and antiprotons together by the trillions at nearly the speed of light to discover some of high-energy physics' greatest hits, including the top quark a host of other new particles. But it shut down last fall after 28 years of operation, the victim of budget cuts, even as the newer and more powerful Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, began churning out its own discoveries over in Europe.
But the Tevatron is still in the game, in a very big way: physicists analyzing data from some of the huge machine's final runs have uncovered evidence for the existence of the Higgs boson, a dreamed-of, talked-about, sought-after particle that has eluded physicists for more than 45 years. It's not the first evidence for the Higgs, which would tie the so-called Standard Model of Physics together with nice, tidy bow. It's not the strongest either: that came late last year, when scientists at the LHC announced an almost-but-not-quite detection that had the physics community humming. But the new findings are an independent, near-confirmation, and when you're talking about some of the trickiest, most complicated experiments ever carried out, that's hugely important. "Based on the current Tevatron data," says a paper describing the new analysis, "and results compiled through December 2011 by other experiments [meaning the LHC], "this is the strongest hint of the existence of a Higgs boson."

Swell. So why is any of this important and what, for that matter, is the Higgs boson? The answer has to do with the masses of various subatomic particles, and those vary wildly. Protons are more massive than electrons, for example, and electrons are way more massive than neutrinos. Photons have no mass at all. For most us, that's no more than a fun fact (and not all that much fun, really). For physicists, though, it's a mystery that demands a solution. Why are the masses so different -- and why do any particles have any mass at all?
The answer, suggested several scientists back in the 1960's, is that the entire universe is suffused with a sort of energy field -- it's called the Higgs field, after the Scottish physicist Peter Higgs who first decribed it. The Higgs field is something like a cosmic molasses, and as particles slog through it, the resistance they encounter is what we measure as mass. Since stars, planets and people are made of those particles, the Higgs field is why we have mass as well.
For the Higgs field to do its magic, it has to ping the protons, electrons and the rest with its own proprietary particle known as the Higgs boson. If you can't find the boson, you can't prove the existence of the Higgs field -- and if you can't prove the Higgs field, you can't explain where mass comes from. So detecting the boson is no minor thing.

By particle standards, the Higgs should be something of a bruiser. Physicists' calculations suggest it would be far more massive than any particle seen to date -- and please don't ask why the Higgs itself has mass. (OK, if you must, it's probably because the Higgs interacts with its eponymous field, just as any other particle does.)
To find the Higgs, you need a powerful accelerator that creates exceedingly powerful -- if exceedingly tiny -- explosions: the particles that condense out of the resulting blast of energy might just contain a Higgs or two. In December, two different detectors at the LHC, just outside Geneva, saw some evidence of the appearance of the Higgs -- in the form of so-called "bumps" in the data at around 124 or 126 billion electron volts (that's the unit of mass when you're talking about particles; a proton's mass is about a billion electron volts). This is in the range in which theorists suggested the Higgs might indeed be found, and while the detection wasn't considered definitive, it was at least highly suggestive.

The new report out of the Tevatron boasts a bump as well. The American version isn't as clear as the Europeans' due to the accelerator's relative weakness: it was somewhere between 115 and 135 billion electron volts. But since that's consistent with what the LHC saw, it bolsters the case that the Higgs may have been snagged at last.
The Tevatron won't be able to help much after this; the new analysis was pretty much the last heroic gasp of the out of the venerable machine. But plenty of Fermilab physicists are involved in LHC experiments all the same: the European machine even has a remote control room located at Fermilab headquarters. And while Tevatron has wound down, the LHC is just getting started. It's ramping up its power for the next round of proton-smashing, so if the Higgs is really there -- as physicists are now increasingly confident it is -- the signal should continue to get stronger and stronger until it's incontrovertible.
That may not take long, either. "I don't think there's any place for the Higgs to hide," Fermilab physicist Rob Roser told the Associated Press. "We'll know the answer one way or another by the end of 2012."

ScienceDaily (Mar. 7, 2012) ? Scientists conducting deep-sea research in the Galapagos have described a new species of catshark, Bythaelurus giddingsi, in the March 5 issue of the journal Zootaxa. The new shark is approximately a foot long and has a chocolate-brown coloration with pale, irregularly distributed spots on its body. The spotted patterns appear to be unique to each individual. John McCosker of the California Academy of Sciences collected the first specimens of this new catshark while diving to depths of 1,400 -- 1,900 feet aboard the Johnson Sea-Link submersible.
"The discovery of a new shark species is always interesting, particularly at this time when sharks are facing such incredible human pressure," said McCosker, Chair of Aquatic Biology at the Academy and lead author on the paper. "Many species have become locally rare and others verge on extinction due to their capture for shark-fin soup. The damage to food webs is dramatic, since sharks provide valuable ecological services as top-level predators -- when they disappear, their niche is often filled by other species that further imbalance ecosystems. Most deepwater shark species are not very susceptible to overfishing; however, since this catshark's range is restricted to the Galapagos, its population is likely limited in size, making it more susceptible than more widely distributed species."
The California Academy of Sciences sent its first scientific expedition to the Galapagos Islands in 1905 and has since organized dozens of return trips. As a result, the Academy is now home to the world's most comprehensive collection of scientific specimens from these famous islands. Most Academy field work in the Galapagos today focuses on the marine environment, where dozens of new species have been discovered in recent decades. In the 1990s, McCosker made a series of dives inside the submersible Johnson Sea-Link to explore the marine life on the islands' steep volcanic slopes and sandy bottoms. Submersibles allow scientists to explore a vast part of the Galapagos that was not accessible to Charles Darwin or earlier Academy scientists. It was during two such dives in 1995 and 1998 that McCosker collected the seven specimens used to describe B. giddingsi. Using research collections at the Academy and elsewhere as a basis for comparison, Academy Research Associate Douglas Long and Smithsonian Institution scientist Carole Baldwin worked with McCosker to confirm that the specimens did indeed represent a new species.
McCosker's marine research in the Galapagos was the subject of a 1996 Discovery Channel documentary called Galapagos: Beyond Darwin. The new shark is named in honor of award-winning filmmaker Al Giddings, who filmed and produced the Discovery Channel project and many more natural history films. McCosker's deep-sea research in the Galapagos is also highlighted within the Academy's Islands of Evolution exhibit, which opened in 2008.
