In his Ph.D. thesis defended at the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country, Aingeru Remiro has developed a process to obtain hydrogen from bio-oil

This press release is available in Spanish.

The Ph.D. thesis of Aingeru Remiro-Eguskiza, a chemical engineer of the University of the Basque Country, deals with the quest for a process to produce hydrogen from bio-oil that has a lower impact on the environment than the process using current routes.

The gradual increase in the price of crude oil and the negative environmental consequences that its use entails are putting us on the threshold of a change of energy model that will need to be tackled over the coming decades. Faced with the obvious necessity of finding an energy alternative that will replace fossil fuels in the near future at least partially and in a gradual way, hydrogen is emerging as one of the alternatives.

Currently, hydrogen is obtained through various methods that require separating the hydrogen from other chemical elements like carbon (in fossil fuels) and oxygen (from water). The methods used for this purpose are not viable from an environmental or economic perspective, respectively, as far as the large-scale production of hydrogen is concerned.

The aim of this thesis was to contribute towards the laboratory scale development of a process for producing hydrogen from bio-oil by means of catalytic reforming using water vapour. Bio-oil is a heterogeneous mixture of wood-based oxygenated products, the catalytic transformation of which routinely entails problems of operability and deactivation of the catalyst. This is because when it is being heated, a fraction of the compounds that make up the bio-oil form a solid residue (the so-called pyrolytic lignin) which collects on the inlet pipes of the reactor and in the reactor itself. The bio-oil used for the research in the thesis was developed at an IK4-Ikerlan plant.

An in-house designed reaction unit

To solve the problems caused by the use of bio-oil, an in-house designed reaction unit was used and which comprises two stages: the thermal and the catalytic stages. In the thermal stage (in which the bio-oil is heated) the controlled deposition of the pyrolytic lignin takes place and this minimizes the operational problems and the deactivation of the catalyst. That way the compounds obtained in the thermal stage are more susceptible to being transformed.

In addition, a third stage has been incorporated into the process: the CO2 capture intended to intensify the production of H2 increases its purity and cuts the associated contaminating emissions. The process involves using an adsorber in the reaction bed and which is designed to capture the CO2. "When the CO2 is eliminated from the reaction bed, we are encouraging the displacement of the reaction equilibriums and, as a result, a greater yield and a greater output of hydrogen are obtained," explains Remiro.

In this context, he stresses that improvement in the CO2 capture in the reaction bed was verified when extremely pure hydrogen, close to 100%, was obtained and at a lower operating temperature with respect to the process minus the CO2 capture.

AUSTIN -- A state bill filed Wednesday morning is pushing for immigration reform. It comes on the heels of President Barack Obama's State of the Union address. Obama discussed his commitment to change; saying it's time to pass major legislation paving the way to citizenship.

A joint poll released by Republican and Democratic firms shows 77 percent of voters support the change.

On Wednesday State Representatives Rafael Anchia and Ana Hernandez Luna filed a bill to take the issue before Texas lawmakers.

The three-page bill calls for a roadmap to citizenship. There are about 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States. Rep. Anchia says giving them a way to citizenship would stimulate the economy.

Anchia says more people would open bank accounts, get college degrees, buy homes and create new businesses and jobs.

Representative Luna calls herself a prime example. She came to the U.S. from Mexico as a young girl.

?I went on to graduate from high school at 16, go to college, went to law school and [was] elected into the Texas House at age 27. I know none of that would have been possible without [the] immigration reform of 1986,? said Rep. Luna.

The bill Luna and Anchia filed outlines steps toward citizenship. It calls for an employment vertification system which would penalize employers who knowingly hire undocumented immigrants.

It would also include a health and criminal background check, proof of employment and payment of taxes. Furthermore, to get a probationary legal status, immigrants must also learn English and American civics.

The representatives are now taking the bill to other lawmakers at the State Capitol for support, and they say they're sending copies to President Obama and other national lawmakers.

They want their bill entered into the Congressional Record and for Texas to become a leader on the movement toward immigration reform.

A New Web Venture for Antonio Galloni - NYTimes.com

Antonio Galloni, a leading wine reviewer for Robert M. Parker Jr.?s The Wine Advocate, one of the world?s most influential wine guides, will depart the publication to start his own wine enterprise, which he said would begin to roll out on the Internet in March.

In an interview Tuesday, Mr. Galloni, 42, said his new Web site, antoniogalloni.com, would be aimed at younger wine consumers, using new technologies and different forms of media than The Wine Advocate, which, though it has a solid Web presence, still retains the flavor of print media.

?My motivation has always been, how do you bring people closer to wine, how do you make stories tangible??? he said. ?I want to use multimedia to bring those wines off the page directly to an audience. I think there?s a huge opportunity to engage people through media and technology. What?s difficult about wine is how complex a subject it is, and with technology, you can reach people in a great variety of ways.??

The Wine Advocate, with Mr. Parker at the helm, has been one of the most powerful voices in wine for almost 30 years. But in the last decade, Mr. Parker has been delegating more and more reviewing authority to other critics. In 2006, he hired Mr. Galloni, who since 2004 had published his own wine publication, The Piedmont Report. At first, Mr. Galloni covered only Italy, but more recently took on Burgundy, Champagne and California as well.

In December, Mr. Parker sold a stake in The Advocate to a Singapore investor and announced that he was stepping down as editor in chief in favor of another Advocate reviewer, Lisa Perotti-Brown, who would be based in Singapore.

Mr. Galloni said that he had been considering the move for several years but that it began to crystallize last June, when, at the Food and Wine Classic held in Aspen, Colo., he ate at a wine-oriented restaurant and was struck by how few people were drinking wine. It occurred to him that consumers were simply overwhelmed by the number of wine choices.

?It was so stark, you should have seen people with great wines, and instead you saw them deferring to beer,?? he recalled. ?I have this vision of going to a restaurant and seeing a bottle of wine on every table. Everything I want to do is centered on how do I make that happen, how can I help people make these choices.??

He said his new venture would try to approach wine differently than The Advocate, which is based on the print model of issuing thousands of wine reviews every other month.

?I want to disseminate information in a continual flow rather than in big, massive articles that are too massive for people to digest,?? he said.

Mr. Galloni said the recent sale of The Advocate had also played a role in his decision. When he was hired by Mr. Parker, he said, it was with the understanding that he would operate independently under the rubric of The Advocate, an arrangement he said worked perfectly with Mr. Parker as editor in chief.

?It?s obviously clear that was going to change,?? Mr. Galloni said. ?I talked to Lisa, and it was clear that the best way for me to guarantee the highest level of independence and quality was to run my own business.??

Mr. Galloni said he was still in the process of putting together a team of investors for his venture, which he said would rest on a foundation of wine reviews but would also employ video and Internet technology to reach more people. He said that he retained the rights to his work at The Advocate, giving new subscribers access to it, and that his coverage would expand beyond Italy, Burgundy, Champagne and California as he added staff members.
