what political science should learn from the Coburn amendment ...

A few weeks ago, Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma tried to ban the NSF from supporting political science research. And of course, a lot of folks in the academy voiced their objection. But there?s a broader question for political science: Why is the political science profession so reliant on NSF funding? Repeatedly, people said that a majority of political science projects are funded with NSF funds. Is this true? If so, then it is a precarious state of affairs.

Academic disciplines should rely on a diverse group of supporters. If Congress deems social science a worthy effort, then great. But if they don?t, then we should still be ok. Relying on the NSF is analogous to a business having a single wealthy customer. That?s usually a bad business model. Instead, social scientists should actively court different sources of funding ranging from the public sector, non-profits, individuals, and the corporate world. If you look at sociology, you see many important projects funded by all kinds of folks. The General Social Survey is your typical big project funded by the NSF. Ron Burt obtained a lot of his data from private consulting gigs. Merton?s reference group research was done for the Dept of War during WWII. A lot of Columbia sociology in the 50s and 60s was sponsored by for-profit groups in New York.

It is up to each researcher to decide what kind of funding they are willing to pursue. But collectively, we should encourage funding from many sources, or we?ll be at the mercy of the Tom Coburns of the world.

National internet tax mandate is in place to cripple the online ...

(NaturalNews) The idea of a national internet tax mandate has been voted on in the United States Senate. Dubbed the "Marketplace Fairness Act," this piece of legislation, if implemented, would stifle entrepreneurs from the online marketplace, enrich large companies, and bloat state governments. This law would force online businesses to become tax collectors, raising the cost of their products, bringing higher prices to consumers. This power grab, recently voted on in the The U.S. Senate, was validated with an overwhelming 75-to-24 vote!Large retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Target have lobbied for this tax. It is no surprise that some of the nation's most powerful corporations are lobbying hard for this legislation. While these companies can afford to absorb the additional burden imposed by this bill, smaller competitors cannot. For example, if a customer in New York makes a purchase from an online retailer in Texas, that retailer must collect New York's exorbitant sales taxes and send it to New York's tax collection agencies.

This law would also allow tax collectors in one state the ability to pursue retailers across state lines, swallowing entrepreneurs in a new wave of tax record keeping and red tape.

This controlling law would even allow big government to tax businesses operating in states that don't require a sales tax.

All in all, corporations will have found another way to dominate, as big government backs them in over-taxing and over-regulating the go-getter, avid entrepreneur out of the marketplace.

This internet tax mandate violates the U.S. Constitution's Commerce Clause, which guarantees free trade among the states. With the Constitution turned on its head, this tax mandate would allow states to levy new taxes on goods crossing into their state via online purchases. Since the United States has thousands of tax jurisdictions within various states, counties, townships, cities, and villages, an internet tax would conflict with several different filing requirements, tax reporting forms, and procedures. This law would create a bureaucratic nightmare scenario that would implode on itself. This is where the United Nations could step in. Just a few months ago, the U.N. drafted a new "Telecommunications Treaty" to impose restrictive regulations, global censorship, and a massive new tax on all Internet operations.

If ratified by the United States Senate, the United Nations' "Telecommunications Treaty" would give control of the Internet to U.N. bureaucrats.

In the end, the U.N. could implement this treaty to steal from the trillions of dollars of online internet commerce. This would crown them as a true world government.

As order is established across the land, establishment bureaucrats claim they support "national security," as they look for new ways to trace, track, and register all Americans' online activity. This includes not only what people read online, what they post on Facebook, or what videos they watch. "National security" wants to track a person's online purchases as well, taxing them many times along the way.

As more control is established, big government stops at nothing to see its citizens choke up more of their hard earned cash, bow at the oppressive hands of irresponsible government, and strangle in tax regulations that could even penetrate the World Wide Web. Controlling bureaucrats think they can control cyberspace now. That's what they think.

A free country thinks differently.

Think differently by signing a petition to stop this.

Facebook In Talks To Buy Bang With Friends

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 11.33.39 PMFacebook is in the process of acquiring startup?Bang With Friends, according to multiple sources, in order to make a foray into the online dating space. According to these same sources, the acquisition will be a $30 million deal in both cash and stock, as that seems to be the standard M&A terms for gimmicky startups these days. Concerned about what the success of college-friendly dating apps like Tinder, Crazy Blind Date and Grouper means for the future of social, we're hearing Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg decided to scoop up the service to ramp up Facebook's competitiveness. ?We're also hearing that Facebook attempted to clone the product, which allows friends to choose which of their friends they're interested in sleeping with (and connects them if the feeling's mutual), internally before approaching the founders. Robust staff penetration and rumors that Google is building a competitive hook-up platform called Google F*ck Now also hastened the deal.

Thailand Property Market Booms as Foreign Investment Reaches ...

ADVERTORIAL

Tuesday 2nd April 2013

Global property investment specialist Knight Knox International explains how ambitious infrastructural plans have resulted in a pioneering upsurge in Thailand?s investment potential, identifying Pattaya and Bangkok as key destinations worthy of investment.

Thailand?s ambitious programme to invest US$72 billion on a raft of infrastructure projects over the following four years has shown that Thailand is certainly not feeling the chill of the global economic crisis.

The main initiative of the plan is an expansive system of rail networks connecting Thailand?s major Northern provinces, including Chaing Mai and Bangkok.

When you combat these plans with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations? (ASEAN) goals to eliminate tariffs and to open new Free Trade Areas, it is easy to see why large volumes of Foreign Direct Investment is currently flowing into Thailand.

The Bangkok Post reported that January alone drew 25 billion baht ($811m dollars) into the country, resulting in a breath-taking year-on- year increase of 68.58%.

These infrastructural plans, which are expected to improve accessibility across the country, are set to aid Thailand?s already-thriving tourist trade. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported that over 22 million tourists visited Thailand last year, holidaying mainly in the popular regions of Pattaya and Bangkok.

These popular holiday regions are both undeniably bustling cities; however they each have their own distinctive features worthy of investment.

?Pattaya is a vibrant beachfront city lined with mind-blowing architecture and luxury hotels. The condominium market is extremely popular with investors in the area, with the second half of 2012 seeing the launch of over 7,000 new units and a take-up rate as high as 69%. This rate is set to rise with the imminent arrival of the Cartoon Network water park which is set to open later this year.

Travel 150km north and you will arrive at Bangkok; a city abundant with magnificent palaces, grand temples and traditional street markets. These features have helped its tourist status grow to an unconceivable level, as shown by a recent accolade awarded to Bangkok by the Travel & Leisure Magazine, who voted it the best city to visit in the world in 2012.

Bangkok is a city currently reaping the rewards of the recent infrastructure plans. The city is at the heart of the new rail system, with five mass transit extension lines set for the area. Construction recently began on two of the lines; the purple line and the blue line, and developers have raised condominiums up across these new networks at a rapid pace, with 12,300 units completed along the blue network alone in the last three years. Investors, in 2012, were able to sell these units at prices 12% higher than they were in 2011, because of the growing mass of people who are willing to pay a higher price to live in this prestigious city.

Specialist property investment companies such as Knight Knox International have long acknowledged the potential of these West Coast areas and have a wide range of developments available to investors from established Thai developers.

?The Thai condo market is booming at the moment?, comments Lee Chettoe, Sales Manager at Knight Knox International. ?The country?s new infrastructure project has helped transform the condo market in cities like Bangkok and Pattaya, and this increase in demand for property has led us to take on the luxury development Chaophraya Condos in Bangkok as well as many other projects throughout the whole of Pattaya.?

Chettoe further comments ?Over the past 12 months we have also found that investors are broadening their horizons and starting to look more further afield than the traditionally popular regions in Pattaya, towards the more tranquil area of Bang Saray; either looking to retire or for a peaceful holiday destination?.

Having built up strong working relationships on-the-ground, Knight Knox International is ideally placed to offer exclusive deals to investors in some of the hottest developments on the market.

Specialists at selling property in Thailand for many years, Knight Knox International also has a wide range of developments available in the popular tourist locations of Koh Samui, Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya and Hua Hin. Studios, beach-front condominiums and designer lakeside apartments are available in a range of locations, with prices starting from as little as ?18,300 for foreign ownership.

Hubble sees J 900 masquerading as a double star

Apr. 2, 2013 ? A new image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows Jonckheere 900 or J 900, a planetary nebula -- glowing shells of ionized gas pushed out by a dying star. Discovered in the early 1900s by astronomer Robert Jonckheere, the dusty nebula is small but fairly bright, with a relatively evenly spread central region surrounded by soft wispy edges.

Despite the clarity of this Hubble image, the two objects in the picture above can be confusing for observers. J 900's nearby companion, a faint star in the constellation of Gemini, often causes problems for observers because it is so close to the nebula -- when observation conditions are bad, this star seems to merge into J 900, giving it an elongated appearance. Hubble's position above the Earth's atmosphere means that this is not an issue for the space telescope.

Astronomers have also mistakenly reported observations of a double star in place of these two objects, as the planetary nebula is quite small and compact.

J 900's central star is only just visible in this image, and is very faint -- fainter than the nebula's neighbor. The nebula appears to display a bipolar structure, where there are two distinct lobes of material emanating from its center, enclosed by a bright oval disk.
